: nice finish on Ranger Reata 1850vs
JinxCanada 01-25-2012, 02:58 PM i took my boat in to get some work done....15hp 4 stroke kicker installed...ship to shore radio (Phantom PS1000) and antenna etc and get the boat all checked over cause i'm dying to get out there fishing as soon as possible. this was the first chance i really got to see the colours of the boat..and since i'm so excited i thought i'd share a few pictures.
I actually really like the silver/purple/black combo. very nice indeed.
Also a picture of the new kicker motor 15hp mercury with panther lift and troll master system as well as my brand new 60" Minn Kota Terrova 80lbs that I traded my Fortrex for. I think this was a great deal too! The Mercury will be installed with the newer controls so that they flush mount in the appropriate spot

Better update your signature, I bet you chose the 15hp kicker because you found a sweet deal on that too?
Colors are nice.
JinxCanada 01-25-2012, 04:30 PM I did actually. I paid $2000.00 Canadian for the Mercury 15hp 4 stroke kicker, Panther lift, and Troll Master System. This would have cost me over $6000.00 new here in Canada. Granted it's a used system, but it came off a Ranger 620vs so it's a easy fit.
:phatyo:
btw...does anyone know what colour combo my boat is on the Ranger site? it's a purple/plum and silver with black interior. any help? Thanks
jalichty@bresnan.net 01-25-2012, 05:09 PM Looks like that 15hp is fast, wouldn't even sit still long enough for you to take a picture.
BroadwayBill 01-25-2012, 06:02 PM He's just putting a black kicker on it so he has a reason to sell it again later this summer.
6,000??????? For a guy that is so good at getting a good deal you sure know how to round them numbers by the thousands.
Bill
NEBRASKA JOHN 01-25-2012, 06:31 PM Gosh I'm really excited too!:yea-right:
So, in Canadian money, my boat should be worth $60,000 or so??? Wow, I will be driving it across the border as soon as it gets nice out!!! When we took a motorcycle trip through Canada 2 yrs ago, the american dollar and canadian dollar were almost the same!! Don't know how you do math up there, but it sounds a little whacked.......then again, maybe medical marijuana is legal there too!!!!

depends. if you have a Ranger 621vs it's worth over $60,000.00 here. a brand new Yamaha 8hp tiller here is $3600.00 and that's a good deal. a 15hp mercury 4 stroke is around $4300.00 then the panther lift is $1000.00 and the troll master system new is around $700.00
prices of boats here etc are insane. I told a couple of dealers that I can buy a Mercury 9.9 bigfoot at bassproshops for $1999.99 and they said GO BUY IT...as it's way below their cost.
The Ranger Reata 1850RS is $43,000.00 plus tax which ends up being $48,590.00 here in Canada without a kicker. Even if you add in just a 9.9 or yamaha t8 you're looking at around $52,600.00 with taxes for that rig. remember 13% tax on everything here in Ontario. Why do you think I buy all my boats in the USA?

Actually your 2008 Ranger Reata 1850 with 150hp yamaha and 8hp kicker used here is worth around $30,000.00 Canadian....maybe even a little more...then there's teh 13% tax on the buyer
doubleheader 01-26-2012, 06:03 AM Jinx, I've been following your boat wheeling/dealing escapades. I look forward to reading your posts, always entertaining, and you always manage to bring on your fair share of critics. I think you like that, I think for you that's at least 1/2 the reason you post. Anyhow, looks like you found a heck of a boat but I'm not sure you ever shared any details on the great deal. It's the 26th of January, we don't even have any good ice, entertain us with how you found and "stole" this boat.
peter8 01-26-2012, 06:13 AM Jalichty, Great post, made me LOL
Jinx,
Do the wages match the prices in Canada?? When we were on our bike trip a case of beer was $50!!! We we're like, holy crap, no one can afford to be alcoholic, but then found out, that isn't the truth:-) Good luck on your escapades man!! Maybe you will actually have time to fish to??? I personally would have gotten a T9.9 to match your motor. Skipped the panther lift and trollmaster crap and just done a tiller handle, but that is me. Let us know if the new color catches more fish?:-)
Lund Man 01-26-2012, 09:16 AM Make sure you read the manual, if available, for the Panther lift. Depending on the year, some have a 'winterizing' procedure. if not followed precisely, they turn into a huge paperweight. The worm gears get contaminated, and the units quit working, usually in the down position, far from the dock.

Just lots of searching online....I actually found this one by typing in "craigslist ranger reata 1850 for sale" on google and it was on the 3rd page. A dealer had listed it for his customer who wanted to sell it and buy a 26ft pontoon boat. They were asking only $19,900.00 USD...I made a stupid offer and they accepted which shocked me. I grabbed the money order from the bank and ran right over there. I had been talking to the dealer for a few weeks but the owner had been busy.
The owner was wealthy....has a $600,000.00 house right on lake st. claire. the trailer had only been used 2 times to get work done and then winterize it as he had a boat lift at his home and stored the boat out of water and covered. I have all receipts for work done and winterizing for the last couple of years.
The boat had a Minn Kota Fortrex 80lbs 62" shaft on it, but I HATE cable bow mounts...and I mentioned this to the owner. Well he pipes up and says "oh hey..I have a Minn Kota Powerdrive V2 70lbs 60" shaft that came with the boat in the garage. I never liked it so I had it replaced with the Fortrex....you can have that too for free!!!" LOL so now I have an extra bow mount.
I found the 15hp Mercury 4 stroke kicker on www.kijiji.ca here in Canada. The kicker came with a Panther lift and Troll Master system which I've never used, and not even sure I need but since it was free included I thought why not right? I wanted a motor with controls...which I got plus he threw in 2 linkage arms for the main motor to kicker motor so I can use the steering wheel to troll.
When the guy sent me pictures he had a brand new never used 80lbs Terrova and I mentioned that I had the Fortrex and that I didn't want it. He offered to trade me straight up for the brand new Terrova...so I pulled the Fortrex off and now I have a Terrova as I wanted....80lbs 60" shaft brand new.
When I brought the Ranger Reata to MapleCity Marine in Chatham Ontario they had brand new Phantom PS1000 ship to shore radios for $100.00 taxes in. So I'm getting one put on the boat, along with the kicker etc.
I'm happy...and I got an incredible deal on a boat that I KNOW I can easily make $6000.00 profit on if/when I decide to upgrade...even if I wait a couple of years. Boats here in Canada are stupidly priced and buying in the USA only makes sense. :exactly:

I'm not sure but....I will tell you for example that my buddy who is a high school teacher makes $97,000.00 a year at top rate...and that was from a couple of years ago. I haven't asked him since.
Police in the USA I believe only make around $40,000.00 where as here in Canada they make salary wise $90,000.00 plus overtime etc. Most cops make well over $100,000.00
Wanna hear something funny... a bottle of Jim Beam here costs $36.00 where as in the USA I can buy the same bottle for $13.00

These jobs are the cream. I do not think most folk in Canada make this kind of coin.

I don't agree. I'd say the majority of Canadians make well over $55,000.00 which is good. The problem with this country is we pay upwards or 38% income tax if you make over $70k, then 13% sales tax on everything you buy. It's tough to make it here for sure...but our health care is covered 100% and the standard of living is well above most countries including the USA.
The USA is beyond belief with poverty, unemployment, national debt to the point of almost going bankrupt as a nation (that is a real possibility btw), never mind the crime, murder etc rates. BUT...you have GREAT PRICES ON BOATS/CARS etc.
I personally would never want to live there. I'd rather pay more and have amazing social services here, free health care etc....government subsidized post secondary education etc. ie/ University here only costs a couple of thousand dollars per semester compared to for example U of Michigan where you would pay around $20,000.00 a year.
Either way, I don't want to turn this into a Canada vs USA thread. :-)

you already did -- free health insurance with 38% tax rate and 13 sales tax -- yeah right LOL
:offtopic:
Stay on topic of his pretty boat and super duper savings.
Don't hijack this thread and turn it into a Canada vs. USA healthcare/political thread..:shame:

Check out stats Canada for the facts on Canadian incomes, I don't go with "I'd say". With Windsor's unemployment rate at 11% and all the plant closures, all you have to do is look around your area.
By the way great looking boat.

Thanks! BTW Windsor is not representative of the rest of Canada. Just sayin....and Windsor was hardest hit due to the near bankruptcy of US Auto makers as many of our companies here rely on making parts for them. The US economic disaster has had a strong impact on Canada. The best part about it has been our Canadian dollar being worth often more than the US currency...and has been staying near "par" for quite some time. It sure makes shopping in the USA a lot easier on the wallet....even after paying 13% at the border on every purchase.
One thing I've never understood is the price difference in Chicken! Here boneless skinless chicken breasts are $8.00 a pound even at Costco...but then I can go to Meijer and get them for $1.77 a pound??? What gives?
so...in Canada in Ontario 2009 the average income was $69,790. just in case you're curious the top level (currently as we have no contract) for a CBSA (Customs Officer) is just under $67,000.00 but will be going up 2-3% each year with our new contract.
Median total income 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009
Canada 60,600 63,600 66,550 68,860 68,410
Ontario 64,500 66,600 69,190 70,910 69,790

I cleaned out the garage today..so hopefully I'll be able to fit the boat in there and take the shrink wrap off so I can clean her all up in time for fishing!
now...back to our regularly scheduled program :-) let's talk about boats!
bucont 01-26-2012, 07:47 PM I think you are looking at total household incomes. Two incomes or someones in for a bunch of overtime to make up the extra $17K at the $25/hr or less.
Here are the hourly pay scales for 2011. I think they are more reflective.
http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/labr69a-eng.htm
You will note that (the minority) in government jobs, health, education and few other select sectors are the only ones over the $25 / hr or $50K per year.
You are real lucky to have your government job, don't ever loose it.
Jlund1 01-28-2012, 07:19 AM Only a few things to add, there a far fewer serious anglers in Canada so the used boat market is rather dismal. Unfortunately this makes the few decent rigs that come up outrageously overpriced. As far as wages, dollar comparisons and political arguments go they are all just numbers. Yes often the wages reflect what we pay for things. Alcohol and cigarettes are controlled by our government and it sort of makes sense that way. I drink and smoked for many years and I'm glad the money I spend goes to my health care in the future. At the end of the day we're all pretty much the same. I'm a pround Canadian happy to have great neighbours to the south. Hopefully many Americans feel the same about us. Have a lovely day.
