I just bought it and from everything I have read about it, it should be a good rifle.
Does anyone else on here have an AR 15 ?

Nice, I like the camo pattern.
I've got a Rock River with a 20" HBAR (heavy barrel) with 1/9 twist...all black.

Love the AR platform

I am also in the market for an AR 15. I have read a lot of good things about the S&W AR 15. I would be interested in knowing your thoughts after you shoot it.

A4 type. Handle instead of flat top like the originals. My next one will be flat to accept a scope with backup rail mounted iron sights. Also likely to be 6.8 or some other caliber larger than 5.56 so I can use it for deer.

I have 5 AR's last time I checked and to be honest as long as you stick with one of the name brands (Colt, S&W, Bushmaster, Remington, DPMS, etc.) you will be getting a pretty darn good gun. I suggest putting a new trigger (I like Timneys) as all the stock triggers are pretty much crap.

My favorite AR I have is a Rock River with a 10.5" barrel and a silencer on it! Lot's of fun and not lots of noise!

Depends on bullet weight.

Educate me

I have 2 Rock River AR's. 1 for prairie dogs, 20" SS heavy barrel, 2 stage trigger, 1 in 12 twist, 24 power scope. I shoot 55gr Hornady ballistic tips. Average day I'll shoot 400 to 450 rounds at the dogs. Yes the barrel gets real hot but that's why I bought it. My other prairie dog rifle is a Winchester mod 70, SS heavy barrel, 1 in 12 twist also. I really like the Win. mod 70 but my thumb gets sore reloading it all day long. I can load up fifteen 20 round mags for the AR and shoot a long time. My other Rock River is a tactical rifle, 1 in 9 twist. I shoot 60gr bullets through it. I reload a lot. There is more information than a person can digest on the AR reloading sites. If your buying an AR for home defense any one will work fine. If you want a tack driver @ 250yrds, do some homework. Light bullets, less twist. Heavy bullets more twist.

@Fireboat

What is your favorite load for the Hornady 55gr?

I shoot 25gr of W748 with 55gr Hornady V-max bullets and it's a very accurate load for my rifle.

I'm shooting a Rock River with a Timney trigger and a 20" coyote HBAR upper with a 1/9 twist and it throws the 55gr just fine.

I always figured 55gr was about the breaking point for a 1/9 twist.....and they handle the wind just fine in most cases.

I've shot dogs at over 400 yards with that combination......a lot ;-)

25gr of H335, Win or CCI primers for the 55gr bullet. I got lucky, both rifles like that load. I was told that a couple of guys that worked in Les Baer's custom shop started the Rock River company. Did you get an Elk last year? I had a cow tag for the 3rd season. I know a rancher that gets vouchers for unit 48, south of Leadville, Co. This year all his vouchers were for cows, good thing because I had over 80 cows walk single file in front of me. I gave the biggest one a ride back to Nebr. 286yrds, 300 WSM.

Your post caught my eye.

I've always thought that the lighter the bullet the slower you wanted to spin it. And the heavier the bullet the faster it needed to be spun.

A 1-9 twist was good for up to about 69 grains and anything heavier needed to come out of a 1-7/8 or 1-8 twist to stabilize.

Had read a while back that throwing anything under 5o grain really needed something like a 1-12 twist otherwise the bullet was coming uncorked soon after leaving the barrel. Especially if they were a hot load.

I could be wrong, but this has always been what I remembered. No one will hurt my feelings if I'm mistaken.

Your are correct. I had the picture in my mind but typed it backwards. That happens when you get old. Sorry if I misinformed anyone.

No elk last year.
I was out of town and didn't get my application in so I had to go with leftover licenses and I ended up with a 3rd season rifle in unit 19 and I didn't see anything.

It was a short season and we had truck troubles one weekend and 80 mph winds the last weekend.....didn't get to hunt much really.

Gonna get my application in this year for sure.

I bought a pound of H335 and some Nosler ballistic tips to play with but I haven't loaded any of those yet. My brother in law shoots 26.3 gr of H335 but he's doing it through a Remington 700 with a strong bolt action....that seems to hot for the AR.

While working up a load for my Win mod 70 I started with 25gr and then loaded 15 rounds increasing 1/2 gr up to 26.5 then decreasing by 1/2 gr down to about 23gr. I tried 40gr, 50, 55 & 62 gr bullets. My rifle really likes the 55gr bullets and I think they do better on windy days. I tried the molly coated bullets but can't tell much difference. I've been shooting the Hornady A-Max because I get them on sale.

what state do you live in that you can have a 10.5" barrel and a silencer ? I thought silencers were illegal anywhere.

I live in Wisconsin. You can have them here, and in a lot of other states, but you need to get BATFE approval the same as buying a machine gun. You also need to pay a $200 tax stamp on each short barreled rifle (SBR) and each suppresor. In Wisconsin you can hunt with them also.

How hard is it to go through the process for licensing a silencer or full auto?

I formed a living trust to get them but otherwise you will need to have the Chief Law Enforcment Officer in your county to sign off of it, then you need to fill out some federal forms, send them in and wait for several months for approval. You also need to send in a $200 check for every item you want. You also need some money! A centerfire suppresor will run $500-$1500 plus the tax, rimfire about $300. Full auto's start at about $5000 for the cheapest ones and a nice M16 will set you back about $15000-$25000!

You may be right, I rum Max loads of H335 and 50 and 55 grain plastic tipped, moly coated bullets through my 700vs and they work very well, two of the AR guys I know tried them and the 50 grain wasn't very accurate, and the 55 was better, but both commented on whether I was over loading them or not.
Seems they are a bit hotter than their varmit loads.
I also didn't like the 69? grain bullets they used in the faster twist barrels.

Not very scientific, but it seems to back up what you mentioned.

I know there is very little difference from an AR to a full auto M-16. But I agree it should be very difficult to get. We sure dont want them in the wrong hands.
That price will keep me from ever getting one. Thanks for info.
