View Full Version : High water river eyes?????
Where do walleyes go when water levels rise in rivers? Do they move in shallower or go deeper?

When water levels come up, eyes will do whatever they can to avoid the increased current. One pattern I look for is around flooded trees and vegetation, pitching 1/8 oz weedless jigs tipped with minnows right into the brush. I notice I need to cover alot of water to find a particular spot where a good number of fish are holding. I also have success around old bridge abutments and riprap which serves to break the current.

It has been my experience that when the water rises in the river they go to the outside to the banks and the creek mouths. They try to get out of the main current. I love fishing the river!
Good luck!

The same rule applies with high water as low water, were did the forage go?
Most often In a river with a grass type shore line the shiners or minnows seek shelter in this area, so will the walleye. The other prime forage holding area in most smalle rivers is mid-channel bars or snag's. During daylight hours this is a good bet.
The night bite under high water conditions will be weed line cruisers. Crankbait's work well here and also sassy shad body types rigged on jigs.
In my experience on big rivers when summer high water hits, look for fish in shallow on the mud-line, windy side of creek arms etc.
Hope this is of some help, good fishing...><,>
