I've heard of this being done, but I have never actually seen it. Any tips from those of you who have done it before?
Thanks

"Fizzing" walleyes sounds easy but in reality is apparently not. Indeed, many biologists have difficulty performing the procedure correctly. And then there is the argument about walleye survivability after the fact. I believe there are departments of natural resources that do not support recreational fishermen trying to "fizz" walleyes. Then what to do? Fish shallower water or eat what you catch. Jay

If you have to fizz a walleye then you are fishing too deep. Please for the sake of good sportsmanship, leave those deep fish alone.

I have caught fish in 15fow and needed to be fizzed. The way I look at is,if I don't fizz them they are dead in no time,if I do they will at least have a chance to live.I don't think that the water depth is the only reason that fish need to be fizzed.I think that they come up too fast to hit the bait, and this causes them to bloat up.The same thing would happen to a scuba diver if he comes up too fast.Just my 2 cents worth.

As a tournament angler I some times need to fizz a fish, it is a delicate operation and with one slip of the needle it's instant rigamortis. I can usually hit it but I still dont like it.
Try snapping a snap weight to the bottom fin. one heavy enuff to hold him up right in the live well. After a while he will usually burp and be fine.
Makes me wonder about you doctors out there. Is it one slip of the needle for us too?

See you all at the Bay

Hey Phil,
On a tip from my Co-Angler I tried exactly what your saying to try while fishing the second day of the Saginaw RCL. It worked!!!! I put a heavy snapweight on the fin just below the anus (not sure of that fins proper name), and by the time we headed in, the fish had knocked the weights off, and were staying upright in the livewell. They made it in safely and were able to be released later. I like that much more than fizzing. I have fizzed fish before, but I really don't like doing it. I will do the weight trick from now on.
