I just got a new Sealine Great Lakes 47 LC. I need to know how much line to use. I want to use 10lb trilene, but the lightest line listed on the reel is 14lb. I only put about 100 yds. on the reel, and the counter isn't even close. The directions say to spool it to the scribed line on the inner spool, I can't see a scribed line on the inner spool! I would suspect that the counter is faulty but this is my second reel, I got one at a sportsman show for an unbelivably low price, and got the other from bass pro. I must not be using enough line because the counters will read 20 ft when I pull the line from the reel to the end of an 8 ft. rod. Any help with this, such as line size, how much would be greatly appreciated.
I will mostly just be pulling plugs, or an occasional planer board. thanks in advance.

The 47's are just a bit large for straight 10# mono. I use them mostly for segmented leadcore, straight leadcore, and 30# test Fireline on dipseys. They will work just fine however if you just fill them up with backing line of some type. Don't get too hung up on exact footages off any kind of line counting reel. The main purpose is just to repeat what you had out the first time and not to be exact at say 62'. You don't really care if it's 60 or 65 feet as long as you can get it back to where you caught the last fish.

There should be a red line going around the outside of the spool. In order to get the counter close, fill up to this line. Go get a cheap spool of mono at Kmart/Walmart and tie on to the line you have on the reel now. Fill up to the red line. Strip the line off and reverse it and you'll be set. You'll be a lot closer on the counter than you are now. Also, if you don't already have it, spend $25 on "Precision Trolling." It will be the most productive $25 you will EVER spend on fishing tools.

My 47 line counter seems to be missing the red line on the reel too. If you fill the line to 1/8" from the top of the spool, the counter should work as planned. The best way to do it is to use a backing , as was suggested, then tie on the line you want to use say on the last 150 feet. This way, you have the preferred line on the end and the counter works right.
