View Full Version : Trolling cranks w/a big tiller
I'm just wondering since most if not all big tillers seem to be rigged with just one big engine/no kicker, how do most of you troll cranks with a tiller boat? It seems like most tiller guys wouldn't run anything else but a tiller and in instances where precise boat control is crucial, as in very rough water, tillers do seem to shine but what about trolling cranks with these big engines? What works the best? Thanks in advance.

I run a lund 2025 tiller with a 115 yamaha 4stroke, when I first got the boat i rigged without a kicker, but have added a 8 4stroke, I never had any problem pulling cranks with the big engine, just need the kicker for slower presentations.

With the way "big tiller" boats are going these days -- up to 20 footers with motors up to 175hp -- I'm not sure what "big tiller" is anymore.
That being said, I ran my four-stroke 80hp tiller on a 1775 Pro-V with cranks all last week and was trolling down to 2.0 mph by GPS going forward. I could have slowed it down more if I'd have backtrolled.
I'm looking to get a kicker motor, but that's more of a matter of a backup in case I break down on Fort Peck. It's often a long run back to relatively few boat ramps there and on some days, you'd have a hard time finding another boat to pull you in. -- mark
