I plan on fishing some lakes that the walleye are relating to weeds. what is the best way to start on these lakes look for weeds with deep water nearby should I texas rig or pitch a jig I am new to the weed thing
When working a weedbed "new to me", I first troll the edge with some kind of tipped spinner rig like a "Little Joe" until I locate the active fish, then anchor in adjacent deeper water and toss a jig right into the edge (and pockets) of the weeds.

When fishing walleyes in the weeds I either fish with slip bobbers, pitch jigs, or troll floaters along the weedline. Although, I recently found a Weedless floater from Phelps Tackle. It can either be trolled, or you can tie it direct and put a split shot on and cast it into the weeds. It works great. Their website is phelpstackle.com. The lure is called the Spongy Bug Floater. Check it out. Good Luck to you.

For weeds I usually troll their edge with what ever fits the adjoining water depth. Usually if active fish are in the area they will bite, This tells you nothing about quantity or size but it helps cover water fast. I mark the active fish with a bouy and after seeing if my bouys show a depth or other pattern I adjust accordingly. I often find the fish out from the weeds. My inside line is just ticking the edge of the weeds. If I find the fish in the weeds, I pitch very light jig and usually a leech so that it falls just over the top outside edge of the weeds as it comes back to me. If these two techniques don't give me any fish I usually don't spend any more time there. Lawrence

I've had fair luck with weed walleye, by trolling a light sliding bullet shaped sinker ahead of a 3 or 4 ft. snell tipped with an inflated crawler. I then troll the weed line or over submerged coontail with the electric trolling motor. The eyes seem to go into these weeds just prior to the mayfly hatch looking for nymphs. They will come out and hit the crawler. Sometimes it can be great for nice sized fish.

bglenn, May sound crazy but here goes. Try a 2 or 2 1/2 in. Johnson silver minnow with a small power grub on as a tail. I live on a small, clear water lake that has alot of weeds and has GREAT weed edges at the 10ft depth. Cloudy days seem better and early am. or late afternoon/evening are for sure the best times to fish.I've fished here for 10 years and except for after dark(absolute best fishing), This has been one of the best ways for me to pull the fish out of the weeds. I think that all of the other methods mentioned above are great ways too,but try the spoon once. You might be pleasantly suprised! I'll be the first to admit that I stumbled onto this .Good luck<;{{{{{<<( Mr.Pke
#1 work the edge with your favorite rig, especially inside corners and points.
#2 Rapalas over the tops of the weeds, if possible.
#3 Get in the stuff. Texas rig an inflated crawler or power crawler (hooks rigged weedless). Weedless spoons. Jig with your favorite livebait and a weedless jig. (Northland Weed Weasel, Odd Ball has one too)

many lakes in WI you can not trool so I cast a shad rap on the outside edge theb take a "slo poke" jig and jig right in them, "weed weasles" also work well. Don't use round ball jigs they dig too deep

Yeah Neal, The northerns do like it too. But they just work through the weeds sooooo good. Plus I don't mind a few snakes with my walleyes.
