Has anyone had the price of gas make the decision for you on which lake you go to tonight? If it is a week's vacation, that's different, but for just going out after work, at what point will it kick in?

It has affected my willingness to ask for help from fishing buddies - Now I'm more than willing to ask, "Can you help me with the petro?"

It has also affected my willingness to fill up friends billion gallon F250 diesel tank and thousand gallon crestliner tank.

Have we got our return on investment from the Gulf War? You could buy a lot of gas with one smart bomb.

Unfortunately, the weather is making this decision for me. The chain of lakes near my house is so filled with water that it's been closed to power boat traffic for over three weeks and with the storms this week it will be closed again through this weekend :-(. This weekend I may have to drive.

Sure HAS!! I need to travel 2 hours or so to get to a good fishing lake and the price of gas has clipped my wings. I am going to Canada from KC in a couple of weeks and need to save up the coins (or should I say $20's) for that trip. I'll bet these prices will drop after the vacation season is over. Well, I'll look forward to fall fishing...I HOPE!!!

They sure are for me!! Fishing closer to home seems like the right thing to do this year!!

NOT Me. I make good money and will pay the gas price for what I want to do. BUT I wont PAY 6.50 for a glass of BEER at the Detroit TIGER'S COMERICA PARK to see the worst team in baseball owned by Little Ceasar's Pizza owner Mike Iltich attempt to play the game.

Me? NO!, wife yes!But I'm a little more fortunate than a lot of you folks, living 17 miles from two good fishing lakes, and 10 miles from a pretty good all round trout striperand walleye river, my driving miles aren't that great. But come winter , when its time to head for the gulf, with the travel trailer, then I'm sure the pinch will relly set in.Last week in Ga. paid 1.17 per gal, for diesel, our local price is 1.35 for diesel, and while the gas prices are a lot higher, my 60 hp mercdont use that much, and my 5 hp kicker runs all day long on less than 3 gals.Since I wont pay 275 bucks for a rod, I can afford to fish almost as much as i want to, the only thing holding me back is tourists, water craft, and a heat index close to the century mark, even at night.I really dont think we wil ever see the price of fuel go back to where it was last summer, its like taxws, who ever heard of them going down?

It sure has. Gas here in NW Ohio is $1.87/gal for the low octane. Fortunately, my comapny pays for my gas in the vehicle but I still have made the decision to stay home some nights as I feel guilty burning up the expensive fuel. I've even backed out of a USFA Tourny opportunity this past weekend because of all the gas for the boat and the vehicle. Not to mention the poor fishing lately on Erie. LOTS OF MONEY FOR VERY FEW EYES!
I am however considering a 9.9 4-Stroke Kicker. At these prices it may just pay for itself in a couple of years.

Yes. I only live 15 miles from the lake, but towing the boat both ways as well as running for a day adds up. I've cut the number of weekly outings from 2 or 3 to 1 or 2.

If you are coming to Ontario, Canada better save some coin, gas is about $3.50 per gallon today. Price fluctuates every couple days but is not going down in a big hurry. Hard to understand the crude oil prices went down but the gas prices went up, somebody's pocketing the money. Good fishing from Rainbow Country!!

Sure does! I fish near home most of the time but work has me on the road and at the pump daily. In doing creel surveys on the Red River anglers are fishing close to home more often due to high prices. Many first time river fisherman discovering the joys of terminal tackle. Many anglers will and do seek near home options over long trips. Guiding will either be a boom or bust this year depending if people will wish one quality trip or two over a bunch of trips, be interesting to hear feedback on that one?

A Canadian web site called Gas wars (#####://24.138.2.177/cgi-bin/board.pl )lists best price in geographical areas across Canada, we need a similar thing I figure to pressure a few price gouger's into rolling back the price to ACTUAL not projected costs!

Al Gore Sr was the president of Occidental oil. His son Al Gore Jr inherited his holdings. Now dosen't that ring a bell.

You guys don't know about buying fuel until you live in Wyoming where the nearest lake is 50 miles away and some we go to is 500 miles away.

Sounds like it is time to move closer to the lakes. I live 30 minutes from lake michigan and it still scares me with the cost!

Just returned from a 21/2 day trip to Waubay and Bigstone.-- Put $35.00 of gas in the tyee and $35.00 in the pickup- paying $$1.80 per gallon - Dang it was fun, but it is starting to hurt the old budget. Ol well I guess we will have to work a few more hours.

My boat gets roughly 2 mpg. That's over $1.25 per mile at marina prices. I would save money by getting towed back every time I go out. I figure $50 unlimited towing insurance would pay for itself in gas with 2 trips back!!! Ya think they would tow me out too? By the way, gas was $2.02 at the pump tonight in Ohio!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to get a second job just to drive to the first one. The Arabs quickly forget don't they?

dummie
06-16-2000, 01:48 AM
I don't think you can blame this one on the Arabs. Blame it on greed. I think these oil companies want the price up and thats what they are doing. In the fall they will come down a little but you still will pay thru the nose. You haven't heard anything about the arabs cutting back, or the government getting involved have you. When these companies merge they can control prices. Unfortunately the poor and those on fixed incomes suffer the most. By the way they just raised it ten cents more yesterday here in Indiana. God bless.

I think the Feds could put their time to better use by leaving Bill Gates alone and going after the oil barons.

That was Bill's big mistake. He didn't contribute to the political parties, the oil companies do. In Mexico they call it a bribe, here it's a contribution.

Gator:

I feel your pain!
Living in SE Nebraska, the drive is 2-1/2 to 6 hours (one way) to get to water that supports fishable populations of 'eyes.
The current most often seen price for 87 octane here is around $1.80/gal.
I mentioned in a previous post that I'm trying to keep expenses level by camping rather than staying in motels. So far, so good.
There will be nights this summer on some of the lakes I fish where overnight temps and humidity (80/80) make sleep very hard to come by without AC (yep, it's a personal problem!).
I can take inflated prices for fishing licenses, bait, ice, etc., in stride much more easily than (grossly) inflated fuel prices.
The individual (or group) who brings those fuel prices back to a reasonable level gets my vote!

I sure am happy that I plunked down an extra $1500.00 for the Ficht last year. A lot of people on other posts mentioned how they wouldn't make back the difference. At these prices it wont take long now....

Noticed on the evening news last night that BP/Shell/Amoco's profits were up over 300% above last year's. Conoco up over 400%, Texaco over 500%. Didn't there used to be more energy companies than that?? Oh yah, our Congressmen/ Senators thought mergers were a good idea. Bet they will be ****ed good for someone when it's time to pay for the campaign advertising.

I have found that I fish the local lakes more and run my 150 with milage in mind instead of "how fast can I get there" anyone else thought of the Iraq embargo and that this may be a lever to remove that embargo?????????

We can thank Al Gore, congress and the EPA for the gas prices. Enviromentlist extreme Al Gore led the way on this one. They wanted reformulated gas and what they did was give the oil refineries an excuse to make more money. Remember these prices come election time. Say what you want but the tree hugging, owl loving, wolf saving, nothing better to do environmentalists have an agenda and it wont do those of us who like to fish and hunt any good.

I remeber a few months ago when the price was approaching $1.40 a gal. The Elected officials of our wonderful country were crying "we have to do something, Let's talk to the OPEC nations." Well they did. OPEC agreed to resume more production.
Now, do you hear anything from our wonderful elected officials? No? Wonder why? Could it be that the Oil Companies are making the biggest profits in history? Could the approaching November elections have something to do about this? Makes you wonder.
Politics and Money. Oil companies and profits.
Think about it!

FYI,
There are more Republicans involved with PETA than Democrats.
Don't go blaming Gore. Blame the Oil companies and the elected officials that are running for reelection. Big profits big contributions.

Can't afford to pay the fuel prices to get from home to Lake Erie every day anymore. Gan't afford to troll once I get there. I give up, time to take up sailing I guess and fish out of a dinghy.

Diesel question - What mileage does a Dodge diesel 3/4 ton truck get running with no load? (commuting) How about when pulling something like a 25 foot fifth wheel? Also don't forget guys, corporations donate for campaigns but they don't vote. We do. The big questions is, is there anyone worth voting for?

I live in Lac La Biche Alberta which is north east of Edmonton. We are paying 64.9
cents per liter for regular unleaded (87 octane). There is 3.875 liters to one American gallon. Thats 2.51 per U.S. gallon(Canadian currency).Premium gas which is 91 octane is 76.9 cents per liter.

I have a 99 f-250 4x4 diesel 19-20 empty. My boat is a Bayliner ciera 2450 with a cuddy cabin (heavy) and get 14-15 mpg at 60 mph. I am not sure about dodge. Hope this helps, email me if you want more info.

Yeah, try going after Shell. Dutch owned. They'd just pull out of the US and then you'd have fewer companies yet competing.

Anyone ever think about the fact that due to environmental regulations that there are much fewer refineries here than 10 years ago? Capacity drops, supply drops.....price rises. Give AlGore his chance for 4 years and you'll be looking for 144 volt trolling motors because even a DFI won't save your rig then.
