Leeches: Tom Korinek

Tom, I appreciate your info regarding leeches. My friend just offered me several dozen large leeches and I was going to go get a large, flat tupperware container and keep them on the shelf in the extra fridge. How many leeches can be put together without them getting too cramped? Any clues on how many leeches per gallon? Thanks for the info!

I currently have 3/4 lb of leeches in a Leech Tammer bag in 1 gallon of water and they seem to be doing fine after 4 weeks. Key things I have learned about leeches are 1) Change the water every several days. If the water gets dirty you will loose them all. 2) Never use clorinated water. I run water in a 5 gallon bucket, let it sit for 24 hours and clorine will desipate. I keep a second container of declorinated water in frig. That way when I take them out of the old water, I can put them into fresh water all ready at cool temp.
3) Ideal temp is around 40 - 45 degrees to keep leeches dormant. 4) Wash white gunk off leeches with declorinated water. If you don't wash them the white gunk will cause them to all die. Pick out any dead leeches when washing.5) The leech tammer seems to work really well as you can lift all the leeches from the container at once as versus chasing the little devils all around the container in the water. Also do not have to pull them loose from the bottom of the container or from your fingers.

Thank goodness people are starting to listen leeches can last a long time if, if you take a few moments to rinse an clean their tupperware.As for how many you can keep in a container my styrofoam shipping container you can hold about 5 to 7#.In a small tupperware maybe 10by12 1to3# the thing is care. spring leeches live indeffinialy as the summer goes so does caring for your leeches summerleeches get weak after they get done spawning.Sorry about the spelling I'm leech trapper not a writer.Tom LOL BAIT

Sorry I didn't read everything Lets say leeches run 150 per # times that by 8 an you have the answer to the gallon question.The leech tamer is a good idea just make sure you rinse the poo out of the bag I like this bag ,I, just bought some of the mat for bags in my shop.Hope I got it all this time .Tom LOL BAIT
