I want to set my lead line outfits up on new reels. I am running it on a couple of older Penn 209 currently but they don't fit my reel seats very well and I would like something a bit more current. I have them loaded with about 150 yds. mono backing, 10 colors 18LB lead line, and am running 20'-25' leaders of 10LB XT. Will this setup fit on a Garcia 6500 or 7500? I don't need line counters, just a nice smooth, durable, med.-high capacity level wind. If you have any ideas let me know. I will also post on the swap board if any of you have something you think might work well for me and want to part with. Thanks for any and all ideas. RJ in Montana...

My fishing partner, Reelman, swears by the Penn 310's. They are silky smooth on releasing the line (good gearing, quality, freespool) and reeling in lures or fish and hold a plenty of lead. Also, Penn always has a good drag.

I don't think the 6500's will work for you. I use the 6500's for 3 colors, 450 feet of backup line and 100' leaders. This all fits perfectly. I just can't see how you could put on 10 colors and still have enough backup mono.

Both the Penn GTi320 and the Daiwa 47LC work well for lead core

Good Luck

RDJ, I've several different setups but the best one is with the 320 Penns, as others have said smooth drag good line capacity. If those 209's of yours are in good condition I may be interested in them when you upgrade. Drop me an email or hit the swap board with them.

RDJ,
See if you can come accross a couple of Shimano Triton 200s. They work excellent for lead core. They have the capacity for about 6 colors. They quit making them, but I have seen them in tackle shops. Alot of times they just sit there in the box as the Okuma's,and Diawa's go out the door. They are a little more compact than the Penn 320 GT's aand a heck of alot lighter. The ones I use are my left overs from my Lake Erie days. Cant find a better reel.

I have been fishing salmon on lakes mi & huron for the past year I have 4 of the Penn 320's. I put two reels in the water with what is referred to as 1/2 core and two reels with full cores which is 10 color. By the way if you are interested or do not know they drop 6' for every color behind the boat running about 2 2.2 MPH. The reels are the best for this type of fishing and I know I have about 50 reels varying size and purpose... Good luck and any q's email me.
