Does anyone know where used boats are going for normal "used" prices? Here in western ND the dealers are asking $3000 over high book and really trying to gouge the customer. Any help would be appreciated.

Go east, young man; go east. According to a relative who worked a bunch of boat shows for Lund this spring, sales of new boats was slow in the Red River Valley and western MN. There is a lot more competition in MN than in our home state. For Lunds, try Blackduck; for Alumacraft, give Moorhead Marine a call, but Steve's in Fergus Falls or Pelican Rapids(I don't remember which)will likely be better. The twin cities have even more competition, but new sales were strong there this spring. I know a few people who use the MN dealers to get a decent price from a ND dealer. Personally, I would give any dealer one chance to be competitive. We can blame the sports car/boat dealer in Bismarck who showed the other dealers that to make sales they only have to offer low down payments and low monthly payments forever. Just like the furniture store "sales".

Gizmo- Have you been shopping at Vallely Marine perhaps? The antelope poachers will try to give you the shaft. Stay away! Funny story. One of my fishing buddies was looking for a boat sponsor and he called the guy at the factory in charge of the program, told him what he wanted, and said that he had an unusual request. He wanted a ride but did not want to buy the boat from the local dealer. The factory guy asks well who are you dealing with and my buddy tells him. The factory guy says well I wouldn't buy a boat from that @$$hole either. True story!

try www.nada.com. It is not region specific but it is a start.

Instigator, good nickname- it used to be mine! Yeah, Vallely's was ONE of the dealers that gave me a ridiculous price. I guess I'll quit wasting my time by driving through their lot when I go to Williston, Minot or Bismarck. I've bought two boats there and always thought I was treated right but the deals have been real poor lately. When a dealer has a boat on the lot for $3000 over book and the customer asks for a cash/no trade price, he had better come down big and fast. We are not all idiots!

How about an aluminum, 17', walkthrough windshield boat with 75 HP motor in the $5000-7,000 range? There are plenty of decent boats that have a book price in that range. I had one once, a Crestliner Sportfish 170, and wish I had it back.

Be sure to read the disclaimer at the bottom of the nada price quote page. Those are prices a dealer would like you to believe. Compare the price that rig is worth on a trade to the price you are supposed to be willing to buy it at. The "d.a." stands for dealers association.
