View Full Version : Spooling line question...

I'm respooling my SG27's and it is loading the line more to one side than the other. This didn't happen the first time I spooled it. What is happening here? One side of the spool is to capacity while the other side is still about 1/8 short from capacity.
I would like to know what I'm doing wrong before doing the other one. I can't figure it out.

I'm holding the line about a foot ahead of the reel, keeping tension on it while I reel it in...

Can anyone help me out here? What's up with this?
Thanks,

Juls
p.s. I didn't take all the line off. I only took about 700 feet off (reading off the counter) and then tied new line to the old.

I spool mine evenly by doing what you said -- holding the line ahead of the reel and supplying some tension. I also apply some direction if I see that one side is building more than the other.

What I would do now is go outside, attach the end of the line to a fence post or tree, then walk it off until you get to an even spool. Then crank and walk back, filling the spool and directing the line with the forward hand. Should work. Good luck.

I always spool my 27LCW with it attached to the rod. You have to hold the line perfectly centered over the rod for it to wind evenly. Running the line through the rod and attaching the line to a post should work fine.

Juls, I think you'll have better luck if you leave the reel on a rod and run the new line through the guides (they add alittle tension) and the rods flex allows the line to load under a more even tension. As you are winding on the new line keep on eye on the spool edges, usually there will be a slight gap that you can fill by pushing the line over with your finger. If you start to get a build up on one side, keep the line on the opposite side of the level wind. That will force it to even out. Hope this helps. Good luck and good fishing.

Thanks Jim,

I tried your technique on the second one and it worked perfectly.
I've seen it done that way before, but wasn't sure what that person was doing moving the line back and forth like that. I never asked. Thanks for the tip my friend..;-)
Maybe next time I'm wondering, I will just ask!
