I am going to be fishing throughout the winter months this year both on open water and through the ice. What level pof thinsulate do you guys suggest. The literature I have read says 500-600g for moderate activy and 800g for low activity. A lot of my fishing will be while seated. Can your feet get too warm? I know that sounds silly, but can they.
Also, any suggestions of brands you like would be appreciated. I have been looking at Rocky Boots and LaCrosse Boots so far.

It really depends on where you live and how resistant you are to cold.
In MN if I was to fish on the ice on a -10 F day you need Ice Kings and sock layering.
I usually fish in a house and if it's 30 below You can still get cold feet in a portable house.
Sitting in a boat is a fairly cold proposition if it's below freezing but big Ice Kings may be awful large for getting about a boat.
I have 3 pair of boots a 1000 G thinsulate rocky, a 400G thinsulate rocky, and a pair of ice kings and they cover most of my hunting and fishing trips.
I do wear the 1000 G Rockys the most but that is my preference.

Sorel Dominators or Lacrosse Snowkings are about as warm as they get.

I suppose all the Army surplus "Mickey Mouse" boots are gone. They are warm, waterproof, durable, and work for anything where there isn't any walking distance involved. They are much too heavy for things like coyote hunting, for example.
I 2nd the Lacrosse Snow Kings.
I was tired of getting cold feet - both while open water fishing - late -- as well as ice fishing. I have used quite a few different brands of boots, along with different sock configurations.
However, after getting the Snow King boots - cold feet are a thing of the past.
Because so much of ice fishing is sedentary - you don't have a lot of circulation to your feet. If you are activly walking all the time, the warmth of the snow kings are unnecessary. But - sitting still they are great.
Take care

The mickey mouse type boot is a very good recommendation for a zero activity style boot. They are very heavy; 53 ounces each but very warm. I have even gone so far as to say they are the best boot to carry in the trunk of your car in case you get stranded in the winter time. You can put this boot on cold and they will warm to body temperature when put on in about 5 minutes.
I have used them with great results ice fishing here in the cold climates of ND.
The most recent way to get this style boot is from Sportsmans Guide in Minnetonka MN, try:
www.sportsmansguide.com
and under search enter super siberian boot. They run from $49.97 to 59.97 depending on color. 100% guarantee so give em a try. or phone:

I have 2 pairs of cold weather boots that I wear. If i am in the boat, there is a chance that I will be in water or something, lacrosse Ice kings. I don't think Lacrosse is still in business unless someone bought them but sorel makes a equal pair. If you do a lot of cold weather outdoor activities, a lot of walking ect. think about getting a pair of steger muckluks. They are, by far, the warmest boots I have ever owned. I have spent 3-4 days winter camping and fishing lakers in the boundary water in -20 temps with these and nothing compares. Also, they weight little more than a pair of nikes. As a side note if your buddies are like mine, when the flag goes up on tip-up it's first come and first serve. My buddies with ice kings and sorels never beat me there. I have been tackled from behind a few times but you can go all day and won't get tired. They are made of moosehide and a special "rubber". I only wear them when it is below freezing, they aren't water proof. Also, care needs taken with them to keep from getting gas\oil on the soles, it will melt them supposedly. I have had mine for 5 years and they are like new still. I will never be without a pair for ice fishing. They are a little pricy but about 6 of us have them now and they have help up great.
Just another option.
