A friend of mine from WI was in a MN baitshop yesterday and the guy in there told him that you don't have to have a MN license to fish the river. I thought that if you came and went from the MN side you needed a MN license. Please help!

As long as it is boundary water you need only one or the other. Keep in mind if you are from MN and launch in WI. when you pull out and have fish you are supposed to take a direct route/short route home not sure of verbage that is used in regs. or from WI. and launch in MN. basically the same.
I have both license and tried to show a warden my non-resident license (could not find my resident right away) he would not accept because of my boat was registered in MN. We had a lengthy discusion about that. Has to do if your license is revoked in your home state anyway hope this clears part of it.
Interesting rule on Pepin if you are a resident of WI. I was told you could fish 3 lines on the WI. SIDE of lake. But only 2 on MN side.

i was told that if you had a wis. lic. that you could fish 3 lines no matter what part of pepin you are in. if this is wrong then i prefished with to many lines. i never got stoped for it. but it was also asked at the meeting if 2 or 3 lines are being used. mn. rules were in affect. so it was only 2 lines. i hope i am right.

I am almost positive that if you are fishing "Boarder" water and one boarder state is your resident state, you MUST have you resident license.

A may be wrong???

2 lines for Walleye fishing everywhere in Wisconsin. Three lines when fishing Lake Trout and Salmon on Lake Michigan.

Hey Guys,

Yep, If you are a MN or WI resident and you want to fish border waters (i.e. St. Croix or Mississippi). You must have a resident fishing license from your state. The non-resident fishing license is only good for inland waters. (Pg 45 of the 2002 MN fishing regs. and Pg 52 of the 2002 WI fishing regs.)

If I am wrong I will apologize in advance but the last I knew WISCONSIN was 3 lines everywhere all the time for anything,UNLESS it was changed recently. Pepin is 2 lines better safe than sorry but I still believe with a Resident WISCONSIN license you can fish 3 on the Wisconsin side, But I would run 2 until for sure, on all of Pepin.

LOL Just looked it up. 3 is the limit. Been fishing two for years. Still will. Sorry about that.

Gon, Skip...

(Using Pepin as a good example)

You're both right, the regs. for both MN and WI say that when fishing border waters you have to obey the regs. of the state whose water you are fishing in. On the MN side of Pepin you can only use 2 rods no matter which state you are licensed in.

When the laws of 1 state are more liberal than the other, you can use the more liberal laws only if that's the state you're licensed in. (i.e. WI fisherman can use 3 rods on the WI side of Pepin but MN anglers can still only use 2 because they have a MN resident license).

I have both a MN resident and a WI non-resident so I could use either. But, if you have only a WI resident license make sure you're not on the MN side where only 2 are allowed, and if you have a MN resident license don't think that you can fish 3 rods because you are in WI.

I live in MN on the border (St. Croix river) and I have a cabin in WI. which is where I am now.

I didn't mean to lecture, but I have a copy of both sets of regs. in front of me and I thought I could help out...
