Thanks to the tips on WC, I can now tie snelled hooks! I bought some colored circle hooks to try out. How do you connect the other end to your main line for quick and easy changes? How would
you tie a loop on the end of the snelled hook leader like the commercial leaders?

Thanks:)

I used to tie the loop, but now I just tie a snap to the end and put a barrel swivel to the end of the main line, if I'm fishing harnesses off of planer boards. If fishing bottom bouncers, I tie the loop, which is easy to do. Just double the line over, and make a loop around your finger...then twist the loop once and pull the tag end thru. The tag end is actually the loop at that point. That's it. The loop can then be attached to the snap swivel that comes on the arm of the bottom bouncer. Some bottom bouncers do not have the arm with the snap swivel, so you can use the first example I mentioned to attach the lead to.

Hope that helps some...

I don't know if you have the same problem I did Juls, but the loop knot always seemed to be the weakest point in the snell. I started wrapping it thru the loop twice, and that helped, but now I just tie an improved clinch straight to a ball bearing swivel. I don't ever doubt the strength then.

I haven't had that problem yet, but then again, I'm probably not catching the big ones like you are..;-)

Most of the time though, I take the loop off and use a snap to attach it to the barrel swivel that's off the main line. My bottom bouncers do not have arms with snap swivels on them. I like using the Lindy X-Change bottom bouncers. I can change the amount of weight on them quickly.

I tie the loops with a figure-8 knot. That's the knot climbers use to attach themselves to ropes. I figure if I trust my life to that knot, I can trust a big walleye to it also.

The knot used by most is the double surgeon's knot. It is extremely reliable if tied correctly. Dont forget to moisten the knot before pulling it snug and pull both the loop and tag end together. The knot appears on many web sites. I tie a good ball bearing snap swivel to my main line and connect it to the loop on the snell. I tie snells for myself and also package them for commercial sales at local bait shops and have not had any problems.

I use the Rapala knot to tie the loop.

How do you tie the snelled knot?

Tag end thru the eye of the hook (from the top, down)...wrap the long end of the line around the shank several times (some do six times, I do ten), and then pull the long end thru the eye from the bottom going up. Then add another hook, this time putting the line thru from the bottom of the eye, and spacing it a distance you like from the bottom hook, (making sure to try and keep the hooks inline with each other)... and wrapping the line around the shank several times again...then back thru the eye from the bottom going up. Snip off the little tag end that is still on the bottom hook. Easy.

No big fish being caught here... I break them off on snags. :)
