View Full Version : Tattle flag replacement springs?

Jeremy

I've noticed in the past that people on here talked about replacing their springs on tattle flags right when they purchased them. Now that I have a couple, I'd like to know what the brand or stock # of the replacement spring is. Thanks in advance for your help.

I know of people that have used a C73 spring and it makes the flag a little stiffer for pulling larger cranks or trolling at a higher speed.

Good luck,

Go to your local hardware store and buy the Century C-73 spring. I have found that it is the best spring for the tattle tail kit.

Might consider using rubber bands instead. If you cut a little notch in the front of the board, then tie a knot in the rubber band, you should be able to get a few hundred replacements for the cost of just a couple rubber bands.

question to chairman

chairman, why would your company continue to package a product that immediately needs to be upgraded? as you are aware, every walleye fisherman needs to replace the black clips with the red clips and the springs need to be replaced prior to using the off-shore trolling boards effectively in normal walleye fishing. i think it is really poor that your company doesn't sell a product that is immedialtely ready to use inder most normal walleye fishing situations.

Tiring comment once again.

If you read some of the old post, you will get your answer. These are not made for walleye fishing only, but many kinds of fishing.

BTW, if you would like to discuss it in more detail off the thread (with a name and email), I would be happy to. I am not sponsored by Offhsore, but I think they make a heck of a board, for ALL types of fishing.

Good luck,

BRS1

BRS1, some of us don't sit on walleye central for the entire day every day. sorry if i missed an old post. the question was for chairman. how has he answered the question in the past? as long as you have decided to be the mediator... let us know why off-shore builds the product with such poor quality components. are you serious, do they not make the board for walleye guys? what the heck fish would need less quality clips or springs? aka - facts please.

First off, it would be impossible to assemble and package the boards to everyone's liking. All of us who use the Off Shore boards set them up the way we prefer them.
The black clips that come with the boards can be used on smaller lakes, where it doesn't get that rough, or in rivers. There are plenty of anglers who never venture out onto the big water where the heavy duty upgrades are a plus.
The springs that come with the Tattle Flag kits DO work, and there are plenty of us who don't see the need to change them.
It's all in how you work with them that matters. For example... For deep diving lures, you can simply put the curve of the spring around the base of the flag arm instead of through the hole (a tip that Eric Olsen gave us a couple of years ago on this message board). This adds more tension. You can drill more holes in the front of the board, and make sure to use the very bottom hole to add more tension.

If you want the upgrades they are available to you. I'm guessing it's just plain cost productive to do it the way Bruce is doing it.

To sell the boards the way I have them configured, it would cost roughly $60.00 per board. Now, do you think the weekend angler would even consider paying that much for one board? I don't think they would. Would they spend $21.00 for a board and $14.99 for a Tattle Tale kit, that would work just as well, but with more detail oriented attention? Probably.
If you were in Bruce's business, who would you target? The masses or the select few? Easy decision if you ask me.

Of course, this is just my opinion...;-)

Happy to talk to you off the board about this, but I won't get into a contest while waisting everyones time.

I frequent the board often because I am an avid fisherman who happens to have the luxury to watch a four screen flat panel and WC happens to be in one of them often. I trade stocks and futures all day long and sit at my desk without usually leaving during market hours. It is my way of taking a break and in the current market environment I need to take more breaks than usual :(.

My apologies,

A four screen panel with WC on one of them? That is very cool BSR1.

Hey, no need to apologize to anyone buddy. Keep up the good work.

Intersting,

I don't like to get myself involved in pi$$ing contest's but....
First of all I am a big fan of the offshore boards, not sponsored by them but a FAN of them. I like the versatility of being able to customize my boards to what I want, not what a company thinks I should want!! I have a large investment in the boards (6) all with tattle flag upgrades, C-73 springs and OR-18 Snappers. I use and make a living using these boards in the Spring, Summer and Fall and always enjoy using them because I made them the way I wanted.
To you "Interesting" I ask this, do you own a boat? If so, after you purchased your boat did you modify it in any way to suit "your needs", if so then you have answered your own question on why would you purchase something that is not to you specific liking right out of the box. I know that in my business I like to have things to my liking, if not I dump them in a hurry because I do not have time to mess with something that does not work. I have had all of the other boards that are sold and went with Offshore boards in the end because of the endless versatlity that they give you no matter what you are fishing for.
To Chairman- Keep up the good work and the great product and I dearly look forward to your next innovation.

As Juls has already stated the boards are perfect right out of the package for people like ME that fish inland lakes that aren't real rough. Thank you, Mr. Chairman, for making My boards :-) Great post, Juls.

juls, this is why i like you so much. you always have a good repsonse and don't seem to have thin skin like some of the "girls scouts" on this board. your info makes sense to me. after all, i have about 10 - off shore boards and think they are the best available product. it has always bothered me that i have to upgrade and pay so much for the "finished" product as i use it. but then again, i spend in excess of $30,000. to $40,000. a year fishing, so what the heck. thanks for the good post.

BRS1, if i wanted to talk to a stock trader, i would call charles schwab right now. it makes it easier to understand why you are such a "jumpy" type guy now that you explained your profession. it's tough out there right now for guys like you. keep your focus on stocks and don't worry about the little details like planer board construction.

Off Shore boards work. Buy them, modify them, fish them, you will not be sorry. :)

I liked the idea of a "Pro Walleye Model" someone suggested. The board with the snappers and springs ready to go.

I would pay the extra $$$ !

It's what we want, there is money to be made, why not?

It is very easy to make your own tattle tale kits. I bought one kit then went to the hardware store and bought plastic washers,ss screws, spings, piano wire, etc. I actually run them on my church boards as I use them for many different things including leadcore and I think that the church boards pull a little better. I use the flags from the offshore boards.Easy project on a hard water day in the winter.

I'm in the process of making my own tattle flags for church boards. Do you have any suggestions, parts, good springs, specs, etc....? Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
