The wife and I are considering a 4-day August trip to the BWCA. This is our first trip up there, and we are planning to buy a completely outfitted trip. Can anyone recommend a good outfitter up there? I know there are lots of them, and I've been sifting through lots of webpages, but I'd really prefer a personal recommendation to pick a quality outfitter. Of course priority #1 is excellent fishing, but with the wife along I want to make sure it is as convenient and enjoyable in every way as is possible (so we might go back!). Also, any other tips or bits of advice for a BWCA first-timer? Thanks a bunch...

Chris, I live in Duluth MN and know many of the Outfitters in the Ely area. I would not hesiate to recomend anyone of them for you. All are first rate businesses. You have a couple choices, email the ones you like from their web pages or call the Ely Chamber at 1-800-777-7281 and ask for Peggy. Good Luck and good fishing

I have been to the BWCA once and to Quetico twice. The first time was a "do it yourself" trip, the second and thrid times were through Tom and Woods Outfitters. Good people, good outfit, a bit pricy but nice canoes and plenty of gear and food for you to choose from. They will also work WITH YOU to set up a desirable route either in the BWCA or in the Quetico Provincial Park. Other folks I have personally talked to are North Country Canoe Outfitters and Don Beeland Canoe Outfitters. Basically anyone you talk to in the Ely area is reputable but I would start with one of those three. If you deal with Tom & woods ask for Blaine or Lyle. Best of luck..

I am specifically looking at Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters. Do you (or anyone else) know of them?
Thanks..

I lived in Ely for over a year and found all the people there A-1. Cant go wrong there.
I went on my first trip of this type 3 years ago and I had pretty much no clue on what to expect.. We chose Canoe Canada Outfitters out of Atikokan, Ontario. I will say it was state of the art....We had fantastic small mouth fishing, with several over 5lbs.
We did a fly in - paddle out trip.. they droped us off in the middle of Lac la Croix and we paddled up and through Pickerell. It was a very good experience. The equipment was all new or very new. Food was good and plentyfull..we had four people and four packs..the canoes were kevlar, so they were very very light..
the whole trip was for a week and with the plane ride, the total was around 550.00 each..(the plane ride was 150 a person). but you can choose your own style of trip....
I hope this helps ya......if you have any other questions I will be glad to help ya...
