What have you found that works best?

A very inexpensive lure getter is simply a spark plug. Just hook on your line then bend the little metal piece tight and let is slide on down your line. Works most of the time, though you may have to shake it a bit to bang the lure a bit more. And when it fails, your only out an old spark plug, and your lure of course.

There is a product called the "Hound Dog" sold through Bass Pro Shops. I think it sells for about $5 or so. It's the best lure retriever I've used. Saved me $100's or more over the last few years. It knocks the lures right out of any tree and dislodged it from most rocky crevices. Great product.

I also have the hound dog. It works very good, and is relatively cheap. Has saved me a ton of lures. Make sure you tie strong line to the retriever.

I've got a yellow colored retriever (got it at either Bass Pro or Cabelas) that has several chains hanging off the bottom. If the heavy dropper doesn't knock the lure off of the snag, the chains usually tangle in the hooks and allow you to pull the lure out. It has literally saved me many hundreds of dollars, especially when I troll the Willow Flowage in northern Wisconsin.

I think that IS the Hound Dog. Whatever - I've got that one. Works 90% of the time.

Hardest parts is holding boat in right spot to use them.

I hang more casting for bass than walleye trolling - easier to get a trolled lure loose - most times.

Also have one of the long pole thingys - it too is worth the bucks.

Saved litterally 100's of bucks in last 10 years - also more inclined to through into snags.

I completely agree about holding the boat in place. Whenever I snag up it always seems that I have several boards out and the wind is howling. By the time I get the other lines in several thousand yards of line has peeled off the snagged rod, I'm heading for a sand bar and I have someone in the boat with me that can do nothing more than sit in the passenger seat and watch the fiasco unfold - and actually I love every minute of it, at least I'm fishing (or trying to!) :D

I've tried them all and the best on is one I made. I bought a telescoping boat hook and attached some small light weight chain to the end of it with a hose clamp. It is sturdy and long enough to grab the lure without putting the boat in the rocks. It also is great to push the boat off. My "budd's" laughed at it until I started charging them $3 to retrieve their lures. Now they all have their own.

Bass Pro also sells one that has a cork screw on the end and extends about 15 feet or so. The problem is when it is fully extended it is not very sturdy. Great to get them out of the trees.

Obviously, I need to practice my casting!!

I've Got the hound dog from Bass Pro, greatest infestment I ever made. I have it on 300lb test waxed cord an put a over sized barrel swifel 2ft above it to stop twisting. I get above the snag an tighten the line an let it slide to the lure an bounce it up an down till it dislages the lure take a little practice, but worth the time. It will pay for it self.

Hi,

The best one i have uses is the Snagaway lure retriever. It has saved me (like you guys) a bunch of money, whether i am fishing in weeds for pike or out on the rocks fro eyes.

Good luck!

Tie it onto a marker buoy - I use trot line / 1/16" or so nylon line - can even use as a buoy weight - but mine is on a spare. If you have to drop and re-manuever the boat - just come back to the buoy.

Awesome suggestion! I have mine on a hunk of wood, but I like the marker buoy idea a lot better. Thanks!

LOL! I've always thought I need to add one of those pole-style tree pruner saws to my fly fishing gear! I don't think it would fit in my vest, though.

This one is my favorite. It has saved many-a-lure and has also brought up many bonus lures that others had to break off. Last one was a 15$ musky bait.:-)

I made mine out of a 5 inch piece of aluminium tubing from an old lawn chair. Drilled 2 holes and put 2 seven inch pieces of light chain with an eye bolt wrapped in clear tubing to keep it from cutting line. Filled it with lead and been using it for 20 years. Long before the hound dog came out. Those dangling chains catch a treble hook instantly. For the time I got in it, probably makes more sense to buy one. Brought up alot of other peoples lures too.

I have one that has some chains on it (sounds like the hounddog)on an old fly reel.Whatever flyline is on it is very strong and the auto-rewind is nice too.I got this at a yard sale years ago and have pulled up snags many times that had lots of other tackle also.

Maybe cheeper to buy one like you said, however, it's much more rewarding when you can make your own had have it work.

I too have the houndog and to make it easier to drop and retrieve I cut off the pistol grip of an old rod and mounted an obsolete baitcaster filled with nylon line. Attach the retriever to the end and get rid of the tangled mess in the bottom of the boat when you have to use the thing. Happy Retrieving!
