Wondering

Wel I hope this doesn't sound to dumb but I just order the Precision trolling guide and I'm siting back daydreaming of heading out and doing some trolling (nothing unusual there) but when you are letting out line do you start the counter with the lure at the tip of your rod and then let out accordingly or is the guide more like a close reference where a few feet more or less isn't going to make that big of a difference? DUmb question I know but the more I think about it the more I think about it ya know :-)

There are a lot of variables involved--too many for a mass-produced reel to be precise. So just experiment with less line, more line, etc. Find an amount of line that catches fish and stick with it. Look at the dive curves and decide whether an extra 10-20 feet of line will drastically alter the depth you're targeting. Also look at the fish/bottom and see if depth varies too. Use as many rigs as possible to narrow down your search to what works. Use a scientific approach, but remember it's not science--it's fishing. Enjoy.

I sure that the book is based on when using boardsyou should start at the rod tip, reset your reel to 000 let out the amount of line needed, snap your board on the line close to the tip, this then acts like your rod tip (example: you put out a 100ft. of line snap your board send it out you have a 100ft. of line out from the waters surface.) Hope this helps.

I dont think it makes a difference. I am sure that there is a little difference in lures and reels of the same make also. I think being consistant is the key. However, 2 feet usually is not going to make a difference.
