I picked up a new (year 2000) Stradic 1000 last night while out and about. When I got home, I swapped the spool with a Stradic 1000 I got last year to make sure the spools would be interchangable. Guess what - their not!! I could hardly believe my eyes! What kind of asinine engineers work for that company. Oh, I purchased this reel after speaking with Shimano customer service, who assurred me they would be interchangable. I'm not TOO frustrated!!

Has anyone else experienced this??

The last Three reels I have bought from them have had mechanical failures after after their first few outings. I have a Shimano Speedmaster rod & reel that I purchased 14 years ago that still functions perfectly. I used to be a Shimano only guy, but that will change. I am going to buy a Fin-Nor and see if I like it, or just cough up the extra cash and buy Diawa's.

I own several Stradics, Sedonas, and Saharas ,new and older ones: however, the 2000 series. The spools all interchange! That was the reason for tying into that system. Do you know something I don't??

Hey Dave,

I have been using Sedona, Sahara, and Slades since they came out,(F2000's) and they all interchange spools. I own 9 of them and I have had lots of different brands, but Shimano has never failed me. Not sure about the other models, Symetre, Stradic,Sustain, etc.

The Big One
PS Maybe they figure you can afford to buy higher priced ones, you can afford to buy extra spools??????

dave,

i own 7 semetre reels and would never own anything different. i started buying these reels 3 years ago and all the spools interchange and ive had not one mechanical failure with any of them. i haven't tried the lesser quality shimanos, but maybe im getting what i paid for with these $80 reels. i even contacted shimano for spacers which they sent me for free!! im extremely satisfied here.

Well, I spoke to Shimano yeaterday afternoon in regard to the spool difference. Apparently, the new fluid drive reels do indeed use a different spool. The gentleman I spoke to was plenty apologetic, and is sending me some spare spools for both the old and new reels.

Works for me, I guess!

Dave,

Shoulda called me. I ran into this with the new ones also. The fluid drive system has a different set up on the post where the spool snap locks.

Are yours the rear drag or front drag? I have several of the fliud drive rear drag spools for the 2000 Quickfire reels.

They did this to deliniate between the two systems.

Do not let an interchangeablility problem ruin the
fact that you have just purchased a Shimano,,,,,
one the finest spinning reel manufacturers in the
world. Their quality and performance speak for
themselves.

Hind sight, man...Hind sight!!

Figured I was in good shape contacting Shimano directly!!

All my spinning reels are front drag. I like the redundancy of being able to swap out any spool with any reel. Now, I'm gonna have to keep "new" spools seperate from "old" spools. Oh well. I haven't tried them yet, but I'm sure I'll run into the same problem with my 2000's as well, which are all Symetrys. I have several of both the new generation and old generation of these as well.

The one saving grace in the whole deal is getting $80 worth of spools for no charge!

Lets hook up one of these days
