Is anyone familiar with salted minnows? A friend took some to Canada and had good luck. where do you get them? Are they as effective as real minnows? can you cross the border with them?

We took salted minnows into Manitoba on a fly in trip. They're just dead minnows preserved in salt.
We were not allowed to take live bait, but we were allowed to take salted minnows across the border. They worked just fine.
