I could not make it this year (major bummer), so everyone gets Wedding Cake from me at dinner celebration/raffle tonight.
Please relay your posts about Juls&Rick Wedding, the Dinner party, the weather and fishing on Erie! I understand it's cold and fishing is slow, but fill me in on how much fun you're having anyway. I miss you guys terribly!

I second that!!!
Last year was my first year there (I brought a 5 gallon bucket of cole slaw) had the best time! I even won a nice trolling rod.
Next year for sure!
Hey PJ, I remember the slaw it was awesome! I couldn't make it this year either and I'm bummed out :-(. Hope to see some posts about the wedding and the fishing.
Best Regards,

Thanks Jamie!
I just looked at the latest NOAA forcast. Waves 6-9 ft tonight! Man, you hardly ever see that in the forecast!

Fishing was real tough. Got out awhile Thursday. Water clarity was about 6". Both Friday and Saturday were a wash. We left after the tournament was called and headed back to NY to get a few hours in on Chautauqua (2muskie)then drove home through the snow blizzard.
In spite of the poor fishing it was really fun meeting some of the people hiding behind the handles. (Supertroller, Ness, Denied, Juls, Drifter and the famous Scott Golden!
We talked to Scott just before we left this morning and he figures there were around 500 people there and that it looks like about 8G was raised for charity through the raffle.

sure missed ya being there! there were 40 (+ young ones) down on the beach for the wedding...oh yeah..3 dogs :)
we had wind, snow, 1 minute of pure sunshine. i'm sure there's going to be plenty of wedding photos posted.
due to the winds/muddy water my partner and i didn't even try to fish on friday (it was mentioned that we all would have been up the creek if it was going to be a fishfry for friday evening). riverking & cecil as well as myself and wizo (partner) headed out sat. morning before the meeting about if the tourney was a go or not. scott did make a good choice by not sending everyone out...we got out but the water was really muddy (about 4 in. of visibility). we marked gobs of fish but couldn't get anything to go and it was starting to rock&roll in the waves by 9:30. we ended up heading in and headed home.
the hall was PACKED on the raffle side (no tables this year, just chairs). standing room only again.....the prizes!!!!!! WOW
(scott did win something this year...paz's spoons etc but he gave those to the youngone who was drawing tickets for us)
i can't mention about the food....was to busy getting the prizes seperated, passing out the hundreds of "freebee's" to those waiting in the long line to register and some who were just waiting and even got into the other part of the hall to pass some out to those eating...oh yeah, and having a great time shooting the bull with the many friends i have made from this here WALLEYECENTRAL thing :)
sure hope you can make it next year sheila!

I finally got the time to attend this year (usually finishing up the harvest)and had a great time. Luck was with me for a change and I won a nice dipsey rod, a rod organizer, and a custom rod (I can't wait to get it!) from 4given,(Duane Jenkins). Food was great, raffle prizes awesome, and the people friendly. I'm certainly looking forward to next year.
The only downer about the whole thing was the weather and lake conditions. After the blow we've had this past week and the forcast calling for 5's and 7's on Saturday, we all did the only thing we could do.....make plans to hunt saturday morning and go whoop it up at PJ's Down Under at the boat basin. There was quite a bunch of dancers in the WC crowd once Freebyrd got things started. Hey Steve.....what kind of band doesn't know the song Freebird anyhow?????
Great time.

This was the first first year that my sife and I were able to attend. We had a great time in spite of the "fishing" weather. You get a little used to being trumped by the big lakes. I enjoyed putting faces together with the names. Juls took time away from her wedding guests to make my wife feel at home and it was appreciated. I finally got to meet Scott, Den, Mary, Rick, and Rick. We met Rick L. and also Indiana Rick. Indiana Rick, If I had known that the ride you had was docked across from us we would have gone out Saturday also. I just didn't want to be out there by myself in case of problems. Hopefully, you are the right Rick! Anyway, we did enjoy ourselves Friday night and at PJ's. We liked the area so, we left the boat down there for another couple of weeks. If the weather and fishing turn around, I'm out of here!

Just a HUGE thank you to Scott, Rick,Juls, the donors of the prizes and everyone else who helped make my first Huron get together a tremendous time.We didn't get into them Erie 'eyes and even if I hadn't had 4 numbers called at the raffle,it still would have been a great time. Den, next year, don't let me buy anything in your store except my license. I thought I had enough Reef Runners even before I won 14 more at the raffle. I can't remember the names of all the people I finally met in person. I don't know if I can wait a whole year to do it again. THANK YOU WALLEYE CENTRAL!!!!!

Now I don't feel so bad for sleeping in some days. We were eating breakfast when EZ Marc left the hotel. Sleeping in works sometimes!
Okay, Sheila, I was devastated... where the heck were you???? And then I found out that the better Golden was still in Colorado. We are doing this differently next year, girls!!!!!!!! I was seriously outnumbered. Good thing Juls is feisty. Back to back in a bar brawl,
her and I could hold our own. (hehehehe)
The wedding was super cool. Beautiful ceremony and SHE had flowers.
I would have had serious problems with no flowers as I believe I commented on, eh Juls? The Children were a bit rowdy... Jack and Merc but boys will be boys, won't they? Anyway, kiddo, except for no fish, we had a ball.... Good friends, good fun, good times.... Next year, YOU better be there. WE missed YOU!

All in all - a good time. Never launched the boat, but met some nice people and was able to finally put some faces on the names I've grown accustomed to here on WC.
Was a bit disappointed by the behavior of a minority (front left hand side of the room) at the dinner, and am surprised to not see it mentioned previously. Seems like many thought they needed to be drunk to have any fun at the event. I didn't bring my son, but my partner did, and he didn't need to hear the obscenities and witness the behavior of these drunken idiots.

I thought they were way overboard and out of line too. Sometimes witnessing someone else's rotten behavior is a good way for kids to learn the proper way to behave in public. I hope your partner's kid was able to realize that those jokers weren't funny after the first time screaming out "Bingo" and complaining that their numbers weren't called. I guess it's tough to throw out the bums once they've paid for tickets, even though their rudeness was iratating to the vast majority of the people there. I don't know how Rick held his cool as well as he did calling all the numbers and putting up with their nonsense.

I agree and unfortunately....we got to sit right beside and behind them. I bet THEIR wives SEND them out fishing, if they even have them. It put a bad side on an otherwise great time. But even with the drunks, it was a great get-together.

Yes they were having alot of fun. I did see a couple kids there just like the young gentlemen pulling tickets. Some of there words were not welcome . And man was the BINGO thing getting to me. Keith I seen you at cabela's on sunday. Congrats on the new ride!

Tom.. I am glad you mentioned this, I thought of it after my post.. I think that was probably one of Walleye Centrals 'unnamed guest' users. They did finaly quiet down at the end. Either Scott got some bouncers or they passed out. Hope they don't make it back for '03.

I never heard the heckling because I was in the back but I heard afterwards there was some "discussion" about how the young man was pulling tickets. Some felt he was looking in and choosing one color over the other in the dollar ticket draws. I never paid that much attention but if he was I can see how it might rub some people the wrong way.
I agree, that drunk was very annoying for all. I noticed by the end of the night he was in a chair, because he couldn't stand anymore. As far as the raffle goes, I did notice that a lot of numbers very close to each other were drawn (espicially early on). I am not sure about the kid drawing certain colored numbers, but I don't think the tickets were mixed up very good. However, I had a good time and cant wait unil next year
when will the gettogether pics be loaded?

for everyones info:
those tickets were mixed, tumbled, stirred by rick lacourse, and myself many many times from start to finish. that 5 gal bucket was 3/4 full of tickets(over 4000 tickets from what i heard in that one bucket). the young lad kept reaching way down into the tickets and most the time came up with more than one ticket between his fingers. after someone mentioned he was looking in the bucket (you'd have to see how many tickets that really is) and picking colored tickets i held the bucket high enough where he couldn't see inside the bucket. i've never won anything at any of these get togethers and like this one i spent $60 on tickets..just my luck. i don't know how more fair the drawing could be. last year we had a real young fellow picking tickets and the complaints were the same. i'd be glad to let anyone take my place up there on stage. or if anyone has a better/simple system to pick tickets (and not a rolling barrel...you'd get the same complaints and it would take much longer, and someone would have to bring/store the barrel etc)let scott know so he can review it.

Ebijack.. I seen the tickets stirred often and well. Go figure.. three of us bought $75, 75 and 90. The one guy won 4 times myself and the 3rd guy nothing. Some guys get all the luck, me I couldn't win a cowpatty in a barn.
You guys did a great job. Only thing I could suggest different would be when you toss out the free be's like the Reef Runner hats, throw some out from the stage and also from the back so all get a chance for them. C YA next year.

all the freebee's i had to pass out in quantity, i passed out thruout the room, even the eating room......i liked those hats too! i believe there were only 6.....i wanted one too! :)
it's always been hard to pass out freebee's since everyone wants one. what's fair? i don't know. how do you spread 6 or 10 pieces between 500+ people. from previous years, i'd have to say you have better odds at "freebees" by getting there early and sitting up front and not by being on stage :)(if you don't watch scott, he will give away your original WC koozies....just ask "just lookin" :))
still the best get together yet! don't know how were going to fit more people in for next year since this thing keeps growing! maybe reservations? now that will bother some people! can't please em all.
every year this gets bigger and better, with all the GREAT folks/businesses adding to the raffle prizes, where do we go from here? the fishing is secondary if you ask some of the folks.....don't know where they get that!
this all started with an idea by rick lacourse, now we have a full blown free tourney with a possibility of coming home with big $$$$ in prizes and LOTS of money donated to charities. who would of thought this COULD happen about this 6 yrs or so ago when scott decided we needed a walleye web site to help fisherman!
THANKS scott, zach, paul etc etc!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the many many folks who put forth theit time to make this all possible.
sorry for the long post, but i know a bit about what it took to get here. it's been a great journey! hope it never ends.

Well, there is one way we are already planning on making it better next year, since you brought it up...;-)
We have already booked the dinner at Mesenburg's Banquet Hall, on Cleveland Rd., in Huron. This hall will allow us to have up to 700 people all in one huge room, and sitting at tables instead of the rowed seating during the raffle. It will be a catered event again, and will also have a "cash bar".
Take Note:
You will not be allowed to bring in your own beverages next year.
The dinner will be the same as this year, but they will add cookies and coffee to the menu too. They will set up two to three buffet tables, so the dinner lines won't be that long.
The dinner date has already been "set in stone" for Friday night, OCTOBER 31st, 2003. And, of course, weather permitting, the tournament will be on Saturday November 1st.
Sheila,
Thank you so much for the wedding cake. It was beautiful and yummy too! Den took the left overs to share with the fishermen at the shop the next day...;-)
I'm still working on getting the photos to Scott, so he can post them, but I'm getting really frustrated with my laptop. It's supposed to be the top of the line, but it's a piece of junk if you ask me. Who the heck came up with Windows XP anyway? Grrrrrr. All software seems to be imcompatible with it...Grrrrr again..lol (growling makes me feel better).

I'm just starting to get used to XP! Don't complain or Microsoft will change it that much sooner.
About the date, do we have to be in costume for the dinner? I had enough trouble trying to recognize people without a mask.

Sounds like a GREAT idea!!!!!! Should be a big improvement over this year, not that I didnt enjoy myself of course.
If i can be of any help on your software probs, let me know.

Not allowing anyone to bring their own beverages is a great idea. Should cut down on some of the misbehavior.
I know you've considered this, but the 10/31 date will be problematic for those of us with young children.

11-06-2002, 05:26 AM
I don't know what the hours are for trick or treat in Huron, but if they are during the daylight hours, take the kids and then keep them dressed up and bring them to the WCGT. I'll bring some candy to pass out to the young ones. Dinner will be the same as this year...6-8pm.
Heck, I think I will dress up in costume too!
No reason why we can't have some Halloween fun at the Get Together too, right?

I was out of town for a couple days and did not have computer access. The get together was a lot of fun. I had my two boys with me and they learned a good lesson on why not to drink from Mr. Bingo . (Also the drunk we pulled out of the river the weekend before.)I was disappointed that so few younger kids were there mine are 14 and 16 and they still like to fish with dad. If we dont have younger people coming up thru the ranks the sport will die. The food was good, the hall was a little small, the prizes were great! My sons won several including the PWT in new york. To bad he is only 14 and to young to enter so I guess dad will have to take his place. What a shame! We did try fishing on Saturday for a couple of hours the waves were not terriable but the color was. We were blanked.Looking forward to next years get together. Rick H.

Juls & Rick,
Sounds like a good plan. Messenberg's with one big room will make it more comfortable and more condusive to being able to get around and talk to more people. Once the raffle started and people were seated unless you were in the back you couldn't really talk to anyone other than who you were sitting around. The food was GREAT - so good that I went to Denny's on Sat afternoon for leftovers...
If this thing keeps growing like it has in a few years we'll have to use the Huron Sports Dome when we outgrow Messenbergs
A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED IN PUTTING THIS TOGETHER!

I would like to echo what Steve has said. Sue and I had a great time, meet many nice folks who we only knew over the internet. I like your plans for next year, larger room with tables and chairs will be a welcome addition. I enjoyed the seminars by Frogman, ETT, Frank K and Mark Brumbaugh. Nice way to pass the time as everyone eats. If you asked for volunteers, I think many of us would have served as voluntary bouncers for the drunks, and I'm only 5'8". Amazing how big this event has grown. Mother Nature OWES Walleye Central for two crappy weather years in a row. Next year, we deserve another year like 2000, so all the out-of-towners can see Erie at its best.

Made my second trip to Huron without wetting the boat. The dinner was fine, but crowd control was a serious problem. Brought my son and he did not need to listen to all that crap. Learned a couple of new words though!! Way too much alcohol for the left front of the room. Venue has gotten too small for the volume of people that show up. Really enjoyed the fall down drunk who claimed to be a factory rep. If so, that company needs to rethink their workforce badly. Disapointed with another big name tackle company who had representatives on site. I know it was a charity raffle, but when smaller companies like Pa's and Reef Runner put up thousands of dollars in prizes, a hundred dollar prize donation from a company that walleye fisherman keep in business seemed really cheap. The people in that room alone probably had over 1/2 million dollars invested in this company. I can choose not to support them with my business in the future. And I know it may not bother others, but those of us that don't smoke really get sick of those that do without courtesy for others in the room. All in all, not coming again without serious improvements.

Really appreciated all the posts everyone.
Eyeman_IN - I knew you'd get out fishing no matter what (yeah, it snowed in '98, but at least we caught worthy whoppers that year!)
Ebijack - I miss you too buddy. Excellent recap on Juls/Rick wedding & Raffle much appreciated. I knew you'd get out no-matter-what too! I will never allow anyone to force me miss this outing again - promise.
Sounds like that some party at PJ's.
Ness - thanks for holding down the female front. (been there/done that and loved it) Hey girl - you, me, Juls & Cindy should double-team up next year in the tourney and attempt some kind of female kick-butt thing. Maybe Capt.Ric/BusyB boat sponsorship??
Rodbuster - I personally like to invite your wife to fish with the girls next year, so she has a great time! OK? I mean it.
Those posting about the raffle prizes they won sound ecstatic. Those that didn't win... a bit disappointed. Every year will be different. The CHARITIES are very thankful all the same. So Sorry to hear about the rotten hecklers. I'm sure that will never be allowed to go down again. Bouncers on agenda for next year. In fact, I'm sure everyone's comments on how to improve this outing will be incorporated next year... so keep them coming.
Hey Juls! Glad you booked the biggest hall for '03. Oh honey, I do wish you chose Nov. 6th, but I trust you know. Hang in there with Windows XP, all features are hidden just to fool you. Chairman sent me some wonderful wedding pictures. The sun did shine at just the right time! Loved your wedding dress - the red Cabelas guidewear!!! Really looking forward to seeing more... I want to take you and Rick golfing when you come to FL this winter.
Hey FreeByrd, what's up with the Salmon Central??? Hehehe. Saw your nice catches posted in W/C Outing pictures!!
Thanks for all the posts on the big event!! Next year will definitely provide banner walleye fishing no doubt!
