Anyone ever try drop shot with a minnow or leech instead of slabbing? Using slab spoons here in CO works well in the winter months for eyes in 20-35 feet but was wondering if a live offering might work better.

I was pretty unsuccessful using a split shot rig at Glendo in September. Only caught a perch with it. I think there's gotta be at least a little flash. My next plan was to add a tiny silver crappie spinner 8-10 inches above a live bait, but the wind sent me packin home. Maybe a red colored hook might have helped out or a phelps floater rather than a plain hook.

You always see the guys on In-Fish using big minnows on heavy jigs in the fall. I wonder if we had access to something besides crappie minnows if that would be effective? Bennetts in Berthoud has big minnows but is a long drive for most of us.

I agree Neal. Try to find some ditches near the water that may have sucker mnnows. We trapped a bunch last week and I will be trolling them, slippin' them, jiggin' them, and maybe even drop shotting with them.
Drop shotting has worked for me in the Pecos River below Santa Rosa for some nice eyes. It seems to work really well in some of the deeper holes in the river.
Sucker minnows are super tough, generally easy to catch if you can find them and work almost everywhere. You can use a minnow trap baited with some dog food, crackers, or a sein in a ditch.
I have sucker minnows from 2 - 10 inches to try this weekend.
Good luck,

Hey SS Stang-
Where are you catching 10 inch suckers at? There no water up by Tramway. Are you using a minnow trap or that spiderman net of yours?
Can you spare a few 4 to 6 inchers?
Good luck at the Butte this weekend!

I don't have many in that size range and I'll need them for the Butte. Should have checked last night before I left Cochiti, but they were real big or real small. I am counting on the medium size to produce. Where are you headed?
I might be willing to make another run after work if you really need some, $5 a dozen.
Let me know,
Up for a cocktail later??

Your trapping them up at Cochiti? ##### of a drive for sucker minnows, might as well buy em at Quality bait. Did you fish the trash pond?
Cocktail... sure you pick the place! I'll be there.

Quality doesn't have squat for minnows. No big shiners, no suckers, and tiny river minnows.
Didn't fish the dead sea. Just went up for bait. That cast net is a nightmare to get dialed.
I'll give a call later on the mobile.

Now if we're talking about river fishing, yes, drop shotting is a good technique, for just about any species. Quite often my first approach for river smallies.
You guys in NM, try it with a worm on the San Juan for trout below the quality waters.
