I was wondering what kind of leader (other than wire) I can use in front of a crank that will keep the nasty northerns from stealing my cranks? What do you use? Thanks in advance.

I dont think there is such an animal that will work on those toothy critters. But I did have some success just using spider wirewith a snap , but I was musky fishing with a pretty good sized lure, and the two I caught didn't cut the line. Maybe a fluro leader of about 20lb test might help.

Trilene Big Game Mono, 60-80 lb test. Tie a two foot length of this to a split ring with an improved clinch knot, then using the same knot on the other end tie on your coast lock swivel. Haven't met a muskie or pike yet that bites through this stuff. VERY abrasion resistant. When it gets too beat up and kinked up, tie another one and resume fishing. Trust me, a hungry gator won't be thinking that your leader is too obtrusive...

Has anyone tried using those titanium leaders. They are supposedly kinkless. At $7 I would hope so!

A short (like 18") piece of 50# test (12# mono dia.) super braid will greatly reduce bite offs. Heck they are even useing it in salt water, and those are some serious toothy critters. Good luck.

Not only are they kinkless, but they are much smaller diameter too than their stainless counterparts. I think that's their biggest advantage.

I make leaders with 50 lb test fireline.Haven't lost a lure yet..... and it doesn't crinkle up like the wire ones.

There is a product called Hard mason Mono that some flyfisherman use for leaders on their Pike rigs. Its hard to find but did see it once in the Bass Pro Saltwater Catalog. They called it Cuda floss. It is clear like mono but real stiff and hard.
