So far its still 14-16", but that could change shortly. The DNR and the band are meeting again this week. I've heard rumors of a slot of all fish under 17" may be kept. The DNRs reasonings to the band are that with this slot many would get limits and not continue fishing, thus reducing hooking mortality. Who knows with the Band though. They have been known to make some unwise decisions.

Somehow that slot just doesn't add up to me. I can honestly say that out of hundreds of eyes that came in my boat there this year, only a couple dozen were 14-17"....maybe. I wasn't out targeting big fish most of the time either. Why don't they just let folks keep two between 18-22". That seemed to be the biggest size year class and two would add up to 6 little ones in total poundage anyway. At least through the winter season. Then do what ever for next year. It seems like there would be a lot more hooking mortality happening if all fish over 18" are released, when that will be the majority of what's caught. I have voiced this opinion to quite a few CO's at Mille Lacs this year and they always seem to be in agreeance. Then they offer this proposal. They need to "thin out the herd" in the larger year classes anyway to keep the forage base in check. I just don't get it.....
