Hi,
I have a Garmin Gps and in the tracking mode I have it set to follow the Path of the Boat straight ahead .My buddy has a Eagle and he has his set to read to the north. He says he always wants to know were north is and its easier. How ever I don't know how it could be easier than just following the line when you retrace your route.AM I STUPID.

I think this is a personal preference. I have tried the "north up" setting and didn't like it. It is more intuitive for me to interpret the screen when the icon for my position is "tracking up" meaning it is always going to the top of the screen. If I want to know the direction, I can look elsewhere on the screen.

Some units may only allow North up viewing in given modes. My Garmin 168 is a case in point. It will only show North up when viewing the map while running. I would prefer the option to choose.
Take care,

Jim, I think you'll find that the 168 will go into track mode when viewing the map. I know mine will when I do a goto. I will also view my maps in track up when running but you must be moving for the map to swing around to track up.

Gotta agree, I set "track up" mode on my unit while in the water. However, when in the truck, I set it to "North up".

I think I am with you. I am referring to running with the hotsposts map and just following the contours on the map.
Thanks,
