Are the new Abu Linecounters available yet? I checked them out on their web-site and supposedly these reels account for line diameter, and spool filllevel. Has anyone actually used these things yet? How do they work? Does the user have to program them for line diameter etc. or are they automatic? And lastly, How well do they work?
Fishing is: One jerk waiting for another jerk at the end of his line.

I've been using one of these since May so hopefully I can give a little insight. You must program the reel for the line you are using and the % full the spool is. You can set it for different wieght mono, superlines, or lead core. You can also select line by diameter.
The setting of the reel is done by three small buttons. Once it is set you do not need to mess with it again until you change lines etc. It is als obacklit so you can see at night and you can set an audible alarm at whatever distance you like. In other words you could set it for 100' freespool your reel and work other rods until you hear it beep.
It yakes a little getting used to but they do work nice.
Another thing to remember is that these reels actually have a real drag on them and there not all graphite or plastic.
They are also available as an accessory so you can put them on your current 6500 or 5500
I spoke to someone at Scheels and he said wont be till after the first of the year. He gave no more specifics then that.
I had dinner w/ Steve Smith of Berkley and from what I got from him it sould like these will be nice. The 6500 reels are perfect for trolling if they had a line counter on them, now you will be able to add it.

I spoke with the people at Abu about two weeks ago concerning the new line counters and was told that they will be available mid February.

I just put a linecounter kit on a 5500C3 and it is a nice size, but there is a lot of plastic in the kit?? I'll have to use it a season to decide if I like it. The Abus are great reels but they do have more plastic in them now so I hope they hold up like those of old.....
Haven't seen the 6500C4 linecounter reels.
The linecounter can also be run on automatic which operates at #10 mono; 95% full reel.
The setting buttons are really small so they would be very difficult to hit accidently and the digital linecounter runs on batteries used in watches.
Pure Fishing said the kits and reels should be readily available in January.

Jay's Sporting Goods in Clare , Michigan has a few of them. I think they were $44.95 each. You can call them at 989-386-9799 or visit their website www.jayssportinggoods.com. Hope this helps- Jon

The LC kit may be housed in plastic, but I would sooner have that than a reel made almost entirlly out of plastic like some other line counters.

They will work on the AB's BUT it will require the AB feature to be removed as well as the "flapper" on top. The clicker also would not work in it.
