Recently I dug my Ice Shack out of storage thinking that very little would have to be done to prepare it for the oncoming season. Last spring before putting the shack away, I loaded it up with Mouse Poison and moth balls. I pulled the cover off last week only to find that the poison blocks had been eaten, the moth balls knawed on, and upon exiting, mighty mouse deficated the poison and chewed a large whole in my tarp. This is not the first time I have had such luck using these preventative measures. Anybody have any ideas. How do you keep mice out during the off season? I'm starting to think this is one tough mouse! Thanks in Advance.

Try to keep the bait out all year long where you are storing things. Don't put the bait in the items you want to keep the mice out of. I put the throw paks of bait in all the corners and along the walls behind things. Never seem to have problems. I especially use a lot of bait in the early fall when the mice start to come in for the winter. seems to do the job for me!

just be carefull if you have pets...just had a case where a guy brings in a near death dog...within just a few minutes the dog died...we did not get to do even one test...owner had no idea what caused problem and wanted an autopsy...my partner did the autopsy and found the chest cavity full of unclotted blood...i spoke with owner next day and asked if he had placed rat poison in home...he said "yes...as a matter of fact his dog had brought him 5 dead mice last wk"...wrong...he actually found six and ate one...second hand poisoning....the green type rat poisons are very toxic if we do not catch it right away...very easy to treat if you see dog/cat eat it...but often the dog/cat will come in litterally drowning in its own blood...the rat poisons...brodificomes...warfarin types that last over a month in the system...remember...often just before the rodent dies he will not act normal and often may walk out right in front of your pet...which becomes an easy meal...steve heckler

You might try using clothes dryer sheets. I've used them in my
boat for storage and they seem to help. Seems the cheepest ones
are the ones that smell the most. Just a thought because they work
for me.

Over the years I have tried several things for my boat and fish house. No one thing works great, but several things together help. Small compartments (glove/tackle compartments) I put several fabric softner sheets in. Larger dry storage compartments I use moth crystals/balls spread out into a shallow cardboard flat. I also use one of the large silver wind up box traps in one corner of the structure. Pitch Packs or bait cubes in the bilge or under the floor(don't open the pitch packs, it keeps the bait fresher and the mice will open it for you. Remove everything out of the structure that isn't bolted down. Clean out any food source(paper books, toilet paper, paper towels wash the floor)and if possible store without the cover on it(I know nobody likes to do that). Think "outside the box" Put traps and poison throughout the building you are storing it in, and check on it every month, clean out and rewind the box trap and bring fresh poison with you. One other thing I have "heard" that works good. Mice get thirsty in the winter time, upside down pop bottle caps filled with antifreeze makes a very sweet poisonous thirst quencher for rodents.

My cat decided to have kittens in my shack this summer, that did a pretty good job of keeping the mice out.
Seriously, I'd try dryer sheets, I've heard from other people that they do a good job of keeping mice out of boats. Otherwise, maybe find a way to hang it from the wall or something, if you have the room.
