I have two St. Croix Premier Med.Lite 6'6" rods and I'm trying to decide between a Shimano Sahara in the 1000 size or the 2000 size. I'm interested in which way others have gone on this issue. (reel brand, type is locked in). Thanks .. Jeff

I have two of the PS66MFL St Croixs coupled with Symetry 2000s, and really like the setup. There is only 0.2 oz difference between the Sahara 1000 and 2000 (9.5 oz vs 9.7 oz). There is a slight difference in Gear Ratio between the two - 6.0:1 for the 1000 and 6.2:1 for the 2000. It really comes down to what "feels" best to you. I like the 2000s, as I feel you get less line twist winding onto a slightly larger spool. This may just be me!! Bring your rod with you to the store and try them both!

I've used quite a few of both size reels, and I choose depending on what the primary use of the combo will be. For jiggin rods where I want as little weight and bulk as possible, I use the 1000, but for rigging setups, I use the 2000 for the extra line capacity. The big spool is nice if I decide I need 10 or 12 pound line in heavy snags.

Another factor to consider is the line you'll be using. If using Fireline 6/2, you can go with a 1000 and use less backing. The 2000 might be better for mono.
Also, put them both on the rod and see which balances the rod better.
Ditto, extra capacity. My brother put 10 or 12 pound mono on one of his 1000's and he could cast almost all the line off.
