I'm waiting for my precision trolling guide to get to me but so I don't know if it will wanswer this question or not but when trolling faster than 1.5mph which I believe is the speed that the book is based on how do you know how deep your lures are running if you are moving at 2.5-3mph?

Read the book, they will tell you ALL about it.
I beleive the book says 2 mph. At least that is
what mine says. sometimes varing the speeds a
little faster or a little slower helps. your
speed naturally varies on a turn. Watch the inside will slow down and the outside of the turn
will speed up. If you get bites during a turn,
remember what side of the boat it came on.
Speeds will effect diferent lures in diferent ways. High speeds cause most lures to run slightly deeper. More subtle action lures may not go quite as deep. Some lures may not talerate high speeds. You simply can't tune them perfectly enough to have them stay down. Speeds over 3 mph are ussually reserved for Dipsys spoons on Erie.
Remember this a lure at depth is working against the upward force of the line pulling through the water. Speeding up or slowing down has little immediate effect because of all the line the lure is dealing with. Good luck. You've made a very wise purchase !!!

I like to experiment with a down rigger rod layed out flat in the rod holder with no board. I have found that there not much difference in depth when trolling faster. The above post is correct about some lures not running well at higher or slower speeds. To speed troll right I think lead core line would be the way to go. "COMA"
Most think lead core looses it ability to push lures deeper at around 1.75 mph` and because of it's large diameter actually blows up higher at higher speeds. Wire line can be run at higher speeds because it is not as fat, but it is ornery, and you only get about 1' of depth for every 10' of line. Hope this helps. Good luck.

1 foot for every 10 foot???? Says Who??? you put a Bomber 25a on 20 to 30 pound braided wire and I guarantee you it will be deeper than 2 feet when you have 20 feet of line out.
I'm not interest in participating in any thing causing aggrevation or upset. The 1' for 10' is for 10# single strand stainless, not 35# braid, and it is IN ADDITION to the lure depth. If you have differing opinions, I'm all ears, but only if you loose the attitude. Sorry I upset you. Good luck.
