View Full Version : Massive Blood Blister
I got my finger caught in a machine at work yesterday and got a massive blood blister in my finger tip. I don't know how I did not rip into the skin and rip half the finger tip off, Thank God it did not!! I have a bood blister a hair smaller then a dime on my good hand's finger. Years ago I vagualy remember having one and draining the blood. I vagualy remember that was the wrong move.( nerves exposed???) I know some of you guys get this stuff on a monthly basis. What's the best thing to do Leave it alone, or drain the blood? Thanks Mike

I suggest an experiment. Get one on another finger. Set up cameras, and lance (drain) one of them, but do not drain the other one. Take daily pictures of each for a couple of weeks, or until one or both of them are completely healed. Post a link to the photos, and we'll create a poll as to which strategy worked best.
Of course, after reading my post, you'll probably want to send me pictures of your extended middle finger...:) :)
HE HE!! that was a good one!! How about you do the testing! Here I was trying to get a good solid answer and I can just see how this thread is going to go. :+ :+

My strategy with those things is to sterilize a needle and puncture the blister to drain the blood. Leave the dead skin in place so that new skin can grow underneath. Eventually the top skin will slough off and you'll have tender new skin exposed, but it seems the longer I delay that, the less sensitive is the new skin.

i'm only a vet (but everyone knows we vets know more than human doctors!!)...i would not drain it as you may introduce infection and the fluid helps to soften the pain when you apply pressure to the lesion...the blood is not really hurtin anything and generally helps on both counts i mentioned...steve
Thanks for the advice. I must add this comment for you Vetspet. I have been watching your posts on the environment. I am not much into politics, but I would have to agree with your side on the things you post. I was brought up Dem and voted all my life for the Dems. But the past years all I see are lies and fear being used, hiding behind women and minorities. Always playing the race card when they can and most of the time when it was not a factor. So I vote for the lesser of 2 evils now So I happily vote Rep now. " They " just always try to scare us all and it never seems to come true or if it does, it is so minout (sp??) it is almost irrelevent. Just your average guy looking at both sides and weighing the facts as he see's it. Sorry I turned this into a political thread. I just wanted to give you ( vetspet) a "that a boy" for sticking up for what I would say is correct from my point of view.

The reason to pop and drain is so that can happen in an orderly, controlled, sterile fashion. If there's the chance of you ripping it open while doing something else--like fishing--then drain and bandage it.
