Can someone recommend from experience a good resort at Lake of the Woods? I am interested in Smallmouth on artificials as well as Walleye and Northern Pike. This would be a trip for six to eight guys and we would want to use guides.
We would be interested in upscale facilities which would include good dining room, etc. All help appreciated.

If you want a up-scale resort, it has to be Sportsmans lodge. They are the nicest and best on the south end.

The Arnesen boys are the nicest bunch you'll ever get to know. They have a new lodge/dining room. Some of the best fishing(southside), and great cabins. Check them out. Tell them "The Big One" sent ya.

Check out Witch Bay Resort in Ontario. I went there last year and was very impressed. This is a serious fishing resort. Phil Rolfe, who is on the walleye central pro page is the camp walleye pro and leads people fishing every day as part of their program for no additional charge. At certain times they also have musky and smallmouth specialists in camp who do the same. I will be there the first week in August, and I believe Perry Good, Mark Brumbaugh, Russ Warye, and Bob Reige will all be in camp that week. Go to Phil's site on the pro page, and hit the link to go to Witch Bay's web site to learn more about their program. Good Luck.

For those species and for a group such as you describe, check out Grassy Narrows Resort out of Morson, Ontario. You can drive in, and it's just a 30 minute boat ride to the resort. Be prepared to gain an average of 12 pounds per week -- the food is great. It's a wilderness experience with comfort and no fly-in. The have a website, but I didn't look for the address.

My son and I spend a week every August at Obobikan Bay Lodge in LOTW. This is out of Morson and is perfectly located to fish several key areas. They have outstanding food and the lodging is great because every cabin has a good hot shower in it. They run 16' lunds with Yamaha 4-strokes and have excellant guides. Try to get Bill Looney if you go. The camp number is 807-488-5812. You won't be disappointed.
by far the two nicest places by Baudette are Sportmans Lodge and Balards, with Sportsman's being te nicest, Good Food, Good Boats and Guides - 27'Sportcrafts, bring your checkbook and you will have a great time

I've been in love with Hanson's King Island for the last several years. Nothing comes close to the experience.

Most of the posts here are giving you advice to go to the Baudette area, which is not good advice in my opinion if you are interested in smallmouth and pike. That's top walleye water, but if you want the best mixed bag fishing you gotta go to the NW Angle. The smallmouth fishing is unbelievable. World class. The area is also very good for northern, muskies and walleyes. And it's a wilderness setting. When I was there in July last year, I was fishing muskies, but another group in a nearby cabin was walleye fishing and they were really slamming them 50-100 per day up to six pounds for four guys. When I was there in August, the walleye fishing has tapered off a little, but was still good. You can catch smallmouth all season, but June is the best. There are many good guides to choose from.
I have fished all over Lake of the Woods. Here are my recomendations. My first choice would be Angle Outpost Resort on the Northwest Angle. A really nice place with excellent meals in a lodge, etc. If you want to stay on an island, I would recomend Monument Bay Lodge or Several resorts on Oak Island or Flag Island. I have stayed at Sunset Lodge a few times, and It's very nice, too. I hear good things about Bay Store Resort. I will be staying at Monument Bay Lodge the end of June, it's a graduation present for my son. and we will be portaging into a walk in lake that according to the Lindners, Spence Petros and others, is one of the most incredible smallmouth and pike lakes anywhere. Monument Bay Lodge has a couple boats in there, you hike in to the lake and use one of their boats. We will also be fishing for walleyes and muskes while there.
Hope I've helped you make your decision. Call these and tell them Bernie the muskie guy sent you.

Grassy Narrows is on Aulneu Penninsula -- in that country you can fish eyes, pike, smallmouth, muskies, and crappies. And, after a pretty good boat ride you can also fish lake trout. Besides, unless you fish in the river, there's not much protection from wind and weather in the Baudette area. A trip or two on big Traverse Bay in a 27 ft SportCraft is fine, but not how I would want to spend a week at LOTW.
