View Full Version : St. Croix Rods
I'm looking for opinions on St. Croix Avid AS60MLF, and how it compares to a Loomis SJR721 IMX in weight and overall feel. I know the St. Croix is cheaper, but does anyone know exactly how much the St. Croix weighs? This will be a jigging rod, so I'm particularly interested in weight. The rest of the specs are pretty much the same between rods. Has anyone used both that is willing to share an opinion?
Thanks,
Eyez
If you are looking for a jigging rod - go with the 6'3" mxf - the backbone and tip make for an outstanding rod. I have built many of them and have yet to have a dissatisfied customer.
The 6' ml has a bit lighter overall action than the 6'3" if you want the lighter action.
The 6'ml St. Croix and the Loomis 721 are almost identical as far as action is concerned.
You will be suprised when I tell you this -- but take the reel of your choice and put on each rod. Then take the tip of the rod and drag it across a piece of carpet - with your eyes closed. Let your fingers tell you which rod is the most sensitive.
Remember $$$ doesn't necessarily equal sensitivity. Materials, construction and many other things make sensitivity.
Buy the rod that suits you and seems to make the most sense to you for your overall needs.
One thing that you might consider -- when you make your choice of line -- both of these rods have been basically designed with mono in mind. If you want to use fireline or similar line - you might want to use an even softer rod -
Take care and enjoy

I agree with REW, go with the "extra fast" tip (AS63MXF) Avid for a jigging rod. I have a couple of the "fast" tip (AS60MF) versions and they are considerably slower. I like the "fast" version for pulling light 3-way rigs, but for jigging, go with the "extra fast".

Thanks for the info guys. Extra fast it will be.

I picked up a brand new 7' St. Croix Legend Elite from Dick's Favorite Sports for $200. This rod retails for $300.

I have the croix rod your looking at buying. I'm extremly disapointed at the sensitivity or lack of that I was hoping for. Mine feels more like a pool cue and I will be bringing it back and getting a GL
Does it feel heavy? Is that why or is it just a total lack of sensitivity? My problem is that there's noone here locally that carries St. Croix, so I'm buying without getting to hold it in my hand first.
Thanks,

I can't speak for the Avid, as all the St Croixs I have are Premiers which I use for rigging, as well as a couple musky rods (they wouldn't make for a very good jigging rod, however!).
I really don't think you can go wrong with an IMX 721.
Regards
Terry, do you have the MXF (extra fast tip) or MF (fast tip)? Reason I ask, is that I have a couple of the MF model and I was also disappointed in the sensitivity, I now use them for pulling light 3-way rigs and for this purpuse they are the best rod I have ever used. My MXF rods on the other hand are extremely sensitive and are wonderful for jigging. Just wondering what you have.
Best Regards,
FJH
You say that you build these. Is there any cost savings in building them over buying them? I would be looking at around 10 rods over the next year or so, so hopefully it would be enough to offset the cost of the books and equipment.

I bought one of the As63mxf rods and it is an incredible rod for jigging. It's almost bad, now that I've gotten used to this awesome rod, every other jigging rod I try feels like crap.
