I am going to buy a new rod for my spinning reel and was wondering what peoples opinions are regarding length and action. This rod will only be used for jigging and maybe a little casting, no trolling. Thank you
G-Loomis IMX 6' medium action, GREAT rod.

Hey Porter,
I would recommend a 6 foot graphite rod, one piece, with a fast tip.
If you are going to use an average jig size of 1/8 oz., get a medium light action. If you are going to use 1/4 oz or more, get a medium action.
As far as brands go, I use Quantum or Berkely rods. You don't necesarily need an IM7 or super dollar rod, just pick one that is high modulous and you will do fine.
One thing to note, these days, an IM6 or IM7 are not that expensive anymore.
Good luck......R

I have a 6' fiber pro, medium light extra fast action from Fig-Rig and cann't say enough good things about it. Have caught a number of fish in the chin, they must miss the jig and bump the line and the set gets them in the chin. Any questions e-mail me...Good luck...Skeeter Boy

Depending on how much you are willing to spend. You really can't go wrong with the St. Croix or G*Loomis rods. I have two matching St. Croix Legend Elite 6'ML teamed with Pinnacle Deadbolts.
It's a lot of money but the sensitivity is awsome. These rods are so light and strong that you could fish for days and not get tired.
My partner fishes G*Loomis IMX and GL3 and swears by them.

I have been using Loomis GLX and IMX SJR 783/782. They are a very sensitive tipped rod. The 783 has alot of backbone for deep jigging. I have found none better. It is kind of like the old Ford/Chev question.

What type of reel seat do you have on your Legend Elite? My wife just got an ES60MLFCS for me last week and I tried it out over the weekend and found the handle diameter was too small to be comfortable in my hand. Looks like the version where the cork on the front actually winds down to hold the reel in place has a larger diameter. Also looks warmer for those Feb. runs to the MIssissippi. Thought it was better balanced for the lighter end of jig size than larger. Since I use larger jig sizes more often than smaller I'm considering trading it in on the heavier action ES60MFTG or ES66MFTG. How much do you think I will lose going to a 6'6" rod. Have always preferred that length but nearly everyone else goes w/ 6' or less for jigging rods. What do you think?

Thanks for the replies everyone, I ended up buying a cheaper IM6. I know that's not what alot of you would of went with but I had to go with Nofish on this one. I am just getting back into this great sport after eight years away and I am loving every minute of it. I am slowly building my arsenal back up with things like rods and reels, lures, electronics and everything else. I really appreciate all the help everyone is on here because I am not trying to buy all the cheap things or the top of line things, just good quality things that work well so I still have money to get on the lake every chance I get. Thanks Again, Porter
