View Full Version : Lowrance LCX-16ci
Last year, I purchased the Lowrance LCX-16ci and have been very pleaed with the performance. I see that Lowrance has recently come out with the LCX-19 which includes WAAS. Can anyone tell me if my 16ci can be updated to include WAAS? I posted the questions with Lowrance, but have not received a response and it's been about 2 weeks. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

My LCX-16ci came with the WAAS receiver. I understand that older
units can be upgraded with a new receiver and a software load.

I guess I was't aware the the X16 didn't have waas?? I see from a previous post that it may have came at a later date. I feel that the waas is definately needed for this unit as it really gives a better positioning. If it is updatable I'd do it if at all possible.

Dave- You can update your X-16. You will need to replace your GPS receiver (puck) with a WAAS enabled receiver. Then download and install the latest version of X-16 operating software from Lowrance's website. Jim Carroll NPAA #588
Sent my X15 in to be replaced and sent the GPS antenna in along with the unit. Had called them earlier to make arrangements for my X15 return and asked if I could upgrade my antenna with a new WAAS antenna. They said return it with unit and it would be upgrade to the WAAS antenna for $129 instead of the $279 they want for a new antenna from LEI.
What are the Avantages of the WAAS antenna verses the Puck? What will you get with the software upgrades? Is it worth it?
Accuracy before Selective Availablity was turned off was 100 meters (approx. 300'), with it turned off now it is around 10 meters (approx. 30'), with WAAS it is around 3 meters (approx. 10'). The puck and new WAAS antenna or puck is the same size and shape as the old antenna or puck. The insides are different to be able to pickup the WAAS signals. I used my Magellan 330M before and after WAAS software was available for the 330M. After I installed the new software, I was able to go back to the same waypoint I previously had set and be within 3-10' of the point I set it at. I used survey markers (pipes), set the 330M on the pipes and set waypoints. I was always able to get back to the same pipe (waypoint) I selected to go to.
I fish on some lakes where small humps are only about 20' across and can motor right up to them. Before I would have to do some searching to find them. Also works real well when going up or down a river and there are rocks or bars that you could hit with your motor. Having previously set waypoints at those obstructions, I have not hit any since then.
That is why I upgraded to the new WAAS antenna (really should be called receiver) for my lx15MT.

Right now WAAS is just a pain in the butt. You cannot get a proper fix for WAAS to stay locked in unless you are way South.

I ran mine all last year on Lake Erie and very seldom had waas drop off and then only for a minute or so.

Dean,
I read a couple of your posts last year regarding the LCX-16ci and recall you had to send it back for repairs. Repairs aside, knowing what you know now about this unit would you buy it again?
Thanks for your response,
Al

Other than it locking up and having to go back once, I have no regrets. The unit is outstanding with great color and clearity. The Navionics map that I got gives great detail of the lake both location and depth. The fish finder seems to be very good also, so all in all I am satisfied.
