X75 and 50KHz SAM module

I bought an X75 for my boat this spring, and Reed's threw in speed and temp, and the SAM free. (great deal!). Question is, I didn't install the SAM, because I didn't think I really needed it. I'm not so sure now, I don't think I'm getting very good target seperation, as almost every fish I mark is a good foot off the bottom. Most of the water I fish is pretty soft bottomed. Does anyone have any experience with this piece of hardware that can tell me if it will improve target seperation in water shallower than 30 feet, mostly shallower than 20?
