Who is or was a better fisherman, you or your father/father figure and why?

The best time to go fishing is whenever you can...

That would depend on what you call a good day of fishing.

My Grandfather never much cared about the fish so much as he did about friends, family and beer on the water. He had the most fun of all.

My Fater catches more fish, so in that right he is better.

And I am more adventures... I will walk further, and find more out of the way places.
So there are days I blow them all out of the water.

Well to me it doesn't matter who is better as long as you can fish together, cuz one day ya just never know you may be fishing alone. With that said I'll say he is....

My father was not a fisherman and consequently never took me fishing. So I guess the better fisherman would be me by default. :)

My Grandfather and father combined there efforts to spark my interest in the outdoors. As a child I always wanted to be better than either one of them. Alas, my father is longer with us and my grandfather (89) is unable to fish an longer. So at various time of the year (birthdays)I will go out fishing using only their gear (rod, reels, lures and ancient braided lines) dating from the 30's to the 60's to honor their influence on my addiction. Although I consider myself a good fisherman with modern means, try keeping it simple once in a while and use a rowboat, no fishfinder, an old glass, bamboo, or steel rod, with an old levelwind and some of the lures of the period and see how much more you have to work for it. When you take into account the methods and equipment used by them I still feel that they were more skilled in their interests than I at this point. Someday, maybe, I will be as good as them with their own means.

My Dad was a very good fisherman,
My Grand Father was a good fisherman too
I remember my Dad telling me about fishing with Grandpa

they only had a row boat back then and my grand father would fish while my Dad rowed the boat ( my dad developed a good upper body )

Grandpa would be in the back of the boat with 2 lines in each hand and at times even a line or 2 in his mouth
no poles just line wrapped on a piece of wood about a foot long with a notch in each end

My dad grew up in Canada by the Ottawa River and there are many lakes around there called Black Lake, Petsnakes Lake, Round Lake etc.
In those days they didn't have many motor boats around there, most everyone used row boats

Oh 1 more thing my dad grew up on a farm with 11 brothers and 1 sister
so fishing was also a way to help feed the family, the fish were not wasted

I've never seen your name above mine on the leader board of ANY tournament I've fished. So I must be better than you.

You can't compare...

If our fathers knew what we know now and had the technology and equipment we do they would have been much more successful. I think the fish populations were better in most lakes (not all) and there were more undiscovered spots and techniques. There isn't a fisherman who wouldn't want to go back in our father's era with our knowledge. Imagine that! The only comparison you can make is currently and since my dad is still old school and doesn't follow technology and changes in the industry he doesn't catch as much. However, my vote goes to my dad for the sake of getting me involved in the first place.

Skills.

OOOoo EEeeee. Man, I was worried you were asking that (who's the better fisherman question) in general. That questioned would have triggered more heated responses and debates than the Irac threads. "Oh Lord its hard to be humble"

Anyway, glad you kept the question in the family. I would say my Dad had as much passion about fishing as I have. He of course, did not have the technical tools I have at my disposal for tracking fish down. Yet, he seemed to have that sixth sense about where to go and what to use.

I'm one of them guys who think you have to pay some dues fishing wise to warrant my admiration and respect. Rather you've just won the PWT or not, anybody can get lucky once. And its actualy more than that. Its about the way you perseve the whole facet of fishing. Some people are fishermen, others go fishing. Dad was a fisherman and the best I'll ever have known. I'm not sure if I'll ever achieve his ranking.

Well, this is an easy one for anyone who has ever spent much time fishing/hunting with their paternal significants. I suspect that every parent strives to make things better for their children and expect them to have a better position in life/perform better in life. My great-grandfather and grandfather were great outdoorsman but it was a way of life in rural America. My father inherited his interest in the outdoors and worked hard to pass it on. He spent many hours working with us to learn how to hunt and fish with lessons passed down from previous generations. I can still hear him preface his instructions with "your granpa used to do it thisaway". I had hunter-safety & boat safety classes long before they were required, failure was not an option! He never used electronics although he would use a marked sting with weight occasionally for depth. He would triangulate a spot using a compass and landmarks. His equipment was not the best but it was always meticulously cared for. His patience was astonishing. He was and is my hero. I fish in more places and probably catch more fish than my dad ever did...but he was and always will be, a much better fisherman.

I'm adicted to fishing and put many many more hours in, so like some others have said, I am probably better at fishing than my dad by default. But, If I could trade that skill for all the ability he had to fix and repair things, I'd certainly consider it. I'm all thumbs when it comes to wood and motors.

My Grandpa was a wonderful marksman but I don't remember hearing many, if any fishing stories from him. My Dad fished, but only on a yearly vacation or a weekend trip here and there.

My father never had time to fish, as he was always working. But my grandparents took me early, and took me often.

As I look back on the time I spent fishing with them, they Always made sure I had the best rod, best bait, and plenty of praise when successful.

Because of this, they will forever be remembered as better fishers than I.

My Dad will tell you I am. But, I had his knowledge to draw on. Then, when I was 19 years old he put me in a charter boat, and I had to learn a lot more in a hurry.
So, the result was I got to fish far more than he did.

He was fairly cutting-edge when I was young 'tho. He had the first open face spinning reel in the area (some french thing). That was in the early 50's. He backtolled before anybody else I ever saw. I used to be embarrassed because we were working backwards and everyone else was drifting. Then, to make matters worse, we were using some funky looking feathery things (jigs) with a lead head and a minnow, while everyone else was pulling Junebug spinners or strip-ons. When the fish bit short, he tied a short little leader with another hook attached from the eye of the jig and hooked that "trailer hook"
into the tail of the minnow.
Then when it got windy he would throw out this "sea anchor" thing that he had Mom sew up out of some old tarp and a couple of round iron rings he had fashioned. That went off the front of the boat on a short rope and with the 10hp Seahrorse, he would work backwards, against it. I was the one who had to haul it in when we'd move. Man, we'd get pretty wet! Boy did that get some looks!
Keep in mind, we are talking 1956-57 or so. I know because the engine was new and it was sea green, and I was in grade school.

So... I must respectfully disagree with Dad. He was better. He was better and more innovative than anybody I knew of. I just did not know it until I was older.
He is now 81 and still wants to bet on first, biggest and most. Heheh...BUT..I am the ONLY one with whom he will fish, without criticizing the boat control. So, he must figure I am pretty good.

the best fisherperson that i know i is my grandma. i rember as alittle kid back in the 70's we used to go to grandmas house up north. 2 weeks out of the summer. my grandma had and old row boat it was a 1 seater. she used a cane pole that was about 10 to 12 ft long. she would go out fishing for bluegills every day. and boy she sure could catch alot. we had fresh fish every day. it sure was great. she also had 11 kids that she taught to fish. just so they could eat. one of them was my dad. we bought a cottage on one of the best walleye lakes in wi. i rember my first day i got to go fishing with my dad. oh thats right you can't catch walleyes during the day. so i had to take a nap. we went out fishing around 9.00 pm. i had my zepco 202 in hand ready to go. well if any has ever had a zepco 202 they new how far they would cast. to make a long story short i caught 2 walleyes that night 17 18 in. so to some it up that was 32 yrs. ago it would have to be grandma and dad. grandma is watching ovre me and dad says my boat goes to fast for him. and yes i showed my dad how to catch walleyes in the middle of the afternoon.

My father. He was a sport fisherman before I was born. I have a picture (black and white) of him and my mother (both gone now) on my wall right here above my computer. He is holding a fishing trophy he won in a competition with the date on it, 1952. I was 3 weeks old when that picture was taken. He had to win it twice in order to keep it, he did. I have the trophy on my mantle, right here. He was my biggest fan, my mentor, he took me. I am doing now what he only dreamed of. With that in mind I will work at the sport he loved and now I do too. It isn't easy living up to his legacy, he was just a fisherman, father and husband. Even though being a "pro" is allot of work it is a labor that keeps me fishing, which is all any of us really want to do. Good fishing. Andy #46.

my dad(KENNY ROACH) is the best fisherman i know! fishing is all we did for entertainment while i was growing up. there was no playing catch or going to the races or to the fair.... it was all about fishing, and man is he a good fisherman. i remember when lowrance came out with the green box... wow did that boost the action! in the early 70's we caught a lot of walleyes over 10 pounds... i have a wall hanger from 74 that went 13lb.15oz. sometimes i wish there had been more of the other entertainment but i guess everything works out for the best. now i have a 6 year old boy who has been going with me since he was 2. he goes out with me in alllll kinds of weather and he never complains about a thing,he loves to fish with dad! now if i could just balance work with fishing,i need more time to fish(time and money syndrome, if you got the time you aint got the money,if you got the money you aint got the time)!
