With two men fishing out of a 19' boat which set up is best for fishing dipsey's. We tried to fish two off the corners yesterday and had boards and plugs on the outside, but with marginal sucess. I'd like to fish 4 dipsey's since most of the fish seems to be coming on spoons, but am not real sure how to go about this. Four looks like it could be a real line tangled mess if you weren't careful. Any help would be appreciated.

Check www.luhr-jensen.com their site may help. About 1 week ago ETT told how he sets them up and runs 4 per side(scary!)If you search back aways you should be able to find the post.

The set up your asking about is simple. First run the Big Dipseys. Spider wire or Fire line would also help as you won't need as much line to get your depth. I use mono though. Line counters are a great addition for consistency. Set 2 dipseys at a #3 setting and 2 at a #1 setting.Obviously for opposite sides. A #3 left and a #1 left.A #3 right & #1 right. Run your dipseys off the back corners. Run your board lines as near mid ship as comfortable. I have no problems with this set up. Good Luck

If you run a #3 setting on the outside and a #1 on the inside is that with or without a board. Maybe Airwave's comment about boards was in addition to 2 dipsey's on each side???

Start out with all the same size dipsies I use the big ones. I use 8 1/2 foot browning dipsie rod matched with penn 209s 20# trilene big game aand your set. The 2 inside dipsies on 1 setting to go port and starboard those will be almost straight down of the stern then set the next two at 3 setting port and starboard again. I have good succes targeting fish that way with 4 dipsie rods seeing that only two of us usually go out and thats the most you can run in ohio anywhere from 100 to 250 back can do the trick the inside rods are hot at lets say 140 the outside should be hot at 160 back subtact and minus 20 from outside to inside like if outside rods are hot at 200 back then set the insine rods at 180 hope this did not confuse you but its the method I used with great succes and no tangle or twists.

Good advice from the others. Just a couple things to add: In general, you'll want to run less line out on your dipseys than line out on your board rods when running boards and dipseys at the same time. This will help avoid tangles between the board lines when sending the board lines out to the side. Take at rod holders that allow you to rotate the dipsey rods both horizontally and vertically. Angle the #1 setting rodholder slightly backward. #3 (or #4 - there is no 4 setting but you can tell where the 4 would be) setting rodholder perpindicular to the boat (straight out to the side). Another cause of tangles can be bringing your outside (#3 or 4 setting) into the boat before it "clears" to the back of the boat. Once you trip the release it will work it's way to the back of the boat and can be retrieved up the center. Also don't let the dipseys out too quickly. Once you get used to running the dipseys, you may choose to "speed set" them by running them all directly out the center of the boat at a rapid ( but constant ) speed maintaining tension. For starters set the outside dipsey then the inside. You want to keep a minimum of 10' line out difference between a 1,2, 3, 4. I try to go at least 15 feet if practical. Outside (#3 or 4 setting) has more line out than inside (#1 or #2) If running 4 dispseys I'd probably go with a 1 and 3 on one side and then a 2 and 4 on the other until you figure out what is the hot setup for that particular day then adjust accordingly. It is also important to retrieve your board lines up the center once they "clear" to the back of the boat. Most common cause of tangles is RUSHING things. I prefer a superbraid line with dipseys. Makes it easier to "read" the rods if in little fish and achieve greater depth with less line out than with mono. I use a superbraid with the same diameter as 10# mono to reference the charts in "PRECISION TROLLING". If you don;t have Precision Trolling it is the best $25 you will ever spend to learn about trolling. The other thing you may want to do is get your fishing buddies together and charter with one of the captains that specialize in trolling. Explain to the captain up front that your main purpose for the trip is to LEARN different techniques. It will be well worth the investment. (You'll also see that even the "pros" sometimes get tangled!) Sorry for the long post and good luck.

Thanks for all the good information guys! I learned more from these post's than two days fishing trying to do everything myself. I'm sure the next time out will be a success. Thanks again.

Sorry KTom I'm not quite sure what you are asking about above with in addition to running boards. The boards are run in addition as you can't run Big Dipseys off in line boards. My post was stating you can set your Dipseys up in the manner I stated and have no trouble running your boards along with them. Sorry for the Confusion.
