I know this isn't about fishing. But my son just bought a camo shotgun and he was wondering if he should use a special oil to clean it with or if he could use a regular gun oil . He was told not to use bug spray when he is shooting because the deet will remove the camo. Thank you in advance.

Camo exterior does not need oiling. Interior mechanisms and inside of barrel can be oiled for storage. Clean with clean, dry cloth before using. Shotguns used dry will generally work the best. You did not mention what type of shotgun. Failures usually come from over lubrication. You will not wear out firearm by shooting dry. Cold weather performance will be enhanced. Firearm should still be cleaned but avoid over lubrication. Which in most cases is almost none at all. Have a number of camo guns and given previous treatment have had no problems. Usually ending up borrowing extra guns out to individuals who overlubricate firearms. If still not sure what to do contact shotgun manufacturer. They will be glad to help you. Keep that son hunting. Good luck.

Contact the Company and ask that specific question. Will deet or any other known product take the camo finish off the gun? They will want you to be pleased with the gun for years to come. Guns promote brand loyalty like few other products. And complaints can tarnish their reputation for a lifetime of buying and influence generations from now.
