What I do is remove the lead center from the end so you have just the Dacron (the outer braided line part) for the last 6". Now Use a Clinch knot and cinch it up fairly tight. Cut off excess, leave about 3/16 inch tag end. Put a Drop of Superglue on the frayed end. DO NOT GET THE GLUE ON THE SPOOL OR THE REEL. Let it dry.
No mono needed!
Use your favorite knot to tie the leadcore to a #12 Barrel Swivel.
Superglue the tag end.
For leader, Use PowerPro or Fireline, in a lb. test rating one "size" below the 'core. Most guys use 18 lb. 'core, so 14/6 Fireline is Good.
I use a snap so I can change lures, some don't, they say it takes away feel. Try both and see what u think.
I would like to thank Steve Alverson for teaching me the Superglue, barrel swivel, and PowerPro parts of this.
Good Luck, and repost or search Archives, there's a lot of 'core knowledge on WC.

I have experimented with lead core at erie, I will tell you how i did it (i'm no lead core pro) I had 100 yards mono backing tied to lead core with the "albright knot " http://www.killroys.com/knots/albright.htm then after my 10 colors I tied the mono leader with another albright , Im sure the pros do it alot diffrent but if you learn that not and practice tying it you'll find its a very strong knot. I only do it this way becuase I wanted to use the smallest presentation.( no swivels or extras) The mono leader I have tried at many lengths....from 25 yards to 3 ft....they all worked...I hope this helps

I use the Uni-to-Uni knot when attaching any two lines together. It is almost the same as the Albright knot shown except you tie a knot on both lines and pull them down to snug up against each other. Use mono for the backing, just like you do for the Superlines. This gives a good base for the dacron leadcore to grip to.

I use around 100yds of 14# Fireline as a backing. It doesn't take much room and will prevent you from getting spoolled if you get something that runs out your line. Also, I run boards so a lot of line can be put out in normal operation.

How do you keep the fireline from slipping on the spool? I've heard others say they wrap the spool with electrical tape after tieing and then add their Fireline. I like to put the mono on first so I use less Fireline on my regular reels and just as a base for my leadcore reels.
