I have a 301 and I was shocked to realize that when I cast the line guide does not run with the spool. Is that normal? My other bait casters do not act this way. I took the reel apart for maintanance and it does not appear to be set up to allow the line guide to move once the casting is engaged. My reel is way past warranty but I was just wondering if this is something that could be fixed. Thanks.:o
It would take too much energy to move the gears and level wind if it worked during a cast. The reels I used as a kid were like that, and you couldn't cast very far with them. The term "free spool" means just that, nothing else turns. Some of the real expensive ones might be different. If you have the the silver colored reel, call Shimano and ask for an upgrade to the new gold reels. Theyu've been redesigned. There was a a series of posts on this a few weeks ago.
