Just wondering if anyone has used inexpensive line counters that are placed directly on the rod. Do they interfere much or does the line run smoothly through them? Would like to use the reels I have without buying line counters. Thanks.

Shakespeare makes one that I have used and for temporary applications they are fine. If you are going to be trolling a lot the line counter reels are obviously better. The model that I am speaking of can be ordered from Cabelas and will work fine for a tight budget. They also will not work very well with spinning tackle because the line is too far from the rod to clip on properly.

I have one,and its just fine, but the guy where I bought it said that not all of them work out of the box. Keep reciept, test as soon as you get it,return it if doesnt work for one that (hopfully)will. If it works out of box it will be fine. Mine works great.

I have the shakspeare one and it works great
I have it for a spare if I take someone fishing that doesn't have a line counter and I use it myself as I only have 3 line counter reels
