VHF Antenna

I am installing a Raytheon VHF radio in my boat and would like to know which 3 foot antenna is the best. What does 1/2 wave and continuous load mean? I realize that the 8 footer is better but I only need a range of about 4 to 5 miles on the lake that I fish.

go with the longer antenna, it may be more bother, but if you really need it it is there. some of the short ones when the weather is goofy wont reach even 2 miles.the cost is about the same for the glass 8 footers too. good luck and good fishin.
