I would like to purchase a reliable hand held marine radio for use in multiple small craft. Wattage is max at 5. What distance can I expect over open water to coast guard? Which brands are the best? Any advice or recommendations appreciated.
Look at SIMRAD'S new HT50. It's what the navy seals are useing. SIMRAD makes top of the line stuf.

Depending on what you want to spend, I've had good luck with Uniden. Pretty reasonable. Range on a good day has been about 8 miles, so far.

I have an APELCO which is the name Raytheon used for consumer electronics prior to changing to Raytheon. It's a model 100 and is fully waterproof and has an aluminum housing so is quite rugged which I thought was very important. I think the ranges are about the same for all of them and would agree with the guys above that it's in the 8-10 mile range if you have a line of sight. Shorter if islands or other obstructions. Look at the battery life of the radio's. The Raytheon is advertised as 6 hours but of course that depends on how much transmitting you do. Receive only it's in the 8 hour range.
