Looking for old pre-dam Mississippi River map (northern half) and can't find a good one anywhere. Can anyone help guide me where to look?

You do know that the dams were built starting in 1880, right?

There is not much for maps out there other than the geographical location of the river. To find one with depth references is a tall order today. I would think that the Army Corp of Engineering would have it if anyone does, but I was unable to locate anything like it online from the ACE. Good luck!

Yes, I know I am searching for something hard to find, being pre-1880. I really don't need to know the depths, I basisally want to see the old river channels (for secret reasons). I can somewhat make them out by looking just below the dams on maps. It seems there should be maps out there, let me know if you come across any. I especially want the dam 12, 13 & 14 area. most of the River didn't change much, just the southern ends of pools is what I need. No reason, except exploration for fish. Thanks

I am sure that the only reliable source, on a consistent basis, at least in Illinois (a fair oiece of the river, will be in county recorders and tax offices if they have the old plat books. I have several old Adams County (Quincy, Illinois) "Atlases" that were prepared from the County PLat records and they ahve good detail of the Illinois (and some of the Missouri) shore and islands... Also, I have sen a 6-7' tall map of the river but it is lacking in detail... That would be an exciting document if you could ever get it assembled... Actually anything pre 1920-1930 would be exciting. The large federal system of dams started in about 1926.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I have drawn a map of my own, and need more pictures/maps to complete it. Meanwhile I'll keep riding around in my jet drive boat searching.
