The wife and I are looking at putting together a triple so we can pull both the 5th wheel and boat. The boat I will be pulling is a Tyee Gran Sport with an IO (about 3150 dry weight) My question is, which camper is well built. Most of the campers I will be looking at have a 10 inch I beem. The max. lenght in South Dakota is 75 feet tip to tip.

I have a ford three quarter deisel, pull a 28 foot 5th wheel and 18foot lund, lenth 63 ft. the law in mn is max 60 ft but if you behave yourself they dont bother but 75 ft would really stick out. all brands of 5th wheels can be good or some can be lemons, pay your money and take your chances, lots of luck.

You sound like you've already spent some time looking under the rear end of 5th wheel campers. Scarey isn't it? Okay, all hitches frame-mounted, no bumper hitches! Brakes on everything. Most of the accidents I've been told of occurred while driving downhill. The boat started to sway, and the lack of boat trailer brakes meant it couldn't be controlled, so both the boat and 5th wheel ended in the ditch. Realize that there is a speed at which the boat trailer will become unstable. You may not be able to see it wandering, you almost certainly won't feel it in the tow vehicle. For the man I work with (his family are RV dealers) it's about 55mph. At 60 mph, his 18' boat starts to wander, and it gets worse with more speed. His father came very close to losing a boat; that after assuring many customers for many years that driving three units down the highway at one time could be done without problems. Personally, I consider it an accident waiting to happen, so my wife and I settle for the cramped quarters of a slide-in camper.

I think Excel used to warranty their 5th wheels even if another trailer was towed. There are likely weight limits, and your boat is heavy. Ask any salesman who says it isn't a problem to show you the camper's warranty restrictions. Read the warranty, don't take the word of a commission salesman.

I HAVE BEEN PULLING A BOAT 16' BEHIND MY FIFTRH WHEEL FOR 7 YEARS. NOW HAVE A 17' BEHIND MY NEW FIFTH WHEEL. HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM. MAKE SURE TOUNGE WEIGHT AND HITCH ARE GOOD AND SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM.
