Could someone explain the rules about fishing inside of Camp Perrys cans. Are you only allowed out there on the weekend? What about at night ? Any information would be greatly appericiated .
I am planning to fish that area for the first time in mid April. Thanks again.

Will,
It is dependent on what you are referring to as cans. If you are referring to A, B, C, etc, I have never seen fishing restricted inside these "cans", but if you are referring to the range "markers", that designate the firing ranges for Camp Perry, there are times when you are not allowed to be in these areas. You need to get a navagational chart so you understand where the ranges are. You then need to monitor Channel 16 and Camp Perry will announce which ranges are closed and when. If you do not hear the broadcast, contact the Camp Perry Firing Range Safety Officer on Channel 16 and you will be told what areas they are firing into and what hours, so you know when they are closed.

First of all, let me say, that most bait shops and marinas in the Port Clinton area, have pamplets explaining what you need to know about the Camp Perry range. You should pick one up before going out for the first time.
The range is made up of two "impact areas" the first, impact area 1 and is aprox. 3 miles for the center of Camp Perry, marked by a series of (I think) yellow, with red band markers. The second impact area is area 2. It is bounded and marked by markers (cans) A thru H. "A" can is about 10 miles from Perry, "C" can is around 8.75 miles. The rest are closer. Before going near the range, you need to contact the range safety officer on channels 16. They you direct you to another channel and then answer you question as to which range they are firing into..

Will,

All firing on the range will cease by no later than 5 p.m. and will not start before 8 a.m. As Bob has told you check before you go out in the morning. They will tell you if they are firing and if they are what range they are using. Normally it is only range 1 which does give you most the reef areas to fish. However, if they are going to use area 2 then plan on going way out north of the cans to fish. (They never shoot at night). If you don't understand the ranges get a good map of the area. Also, you can see the range boats and if you are in the wrong area they will chase you out. Good fishing.
