Am I right in thinking that fish hatcheries are
open to the public????? We stopped at one in
Van Hornesville that looked open (no signs up that
said different) but when I stepped out of the car
I got charged by a Rottweiler. After ten years
of raising German Shepherds, luckily I knew exactly how to handle the situation. (They never
bite if they think you're meaner than they are)
If the public has a right to be there, I'm wondering what JAWS was doing there????? He came
out of a doghouse so obviously he belongs... Glad
I wasn't some little kid that would have screamed
and ran, I probably would have wound up in need
of a plastic surgeon.

The NYDEC dosn't want anybody messing with their prized Paddlefish stock.....lol

What DEC region is that in? give them a call and find out whats going on...Most of them run on those weird Tourist schedules; open Thursday through Sunday and closed the rest of the week. Isn't that the hatchery for Muskies? I read somewhere that the Muskie hatchery is not open to the public.

I'll bet that Rottweiler is still whimpering :-)
Don't know about New York, but there are private hatcheries Ness.

Not a private hatchery... state. It was a Sunday.
And it was a rainbow trout hatchery. I'm embarrassed to admit it but N.Y. State seems to be
stuck on trout...lol

Ness, they train their dogs to sniff out the walleye fishermen cause they know that the fish they spend so any millions of dollars on every year makes such a premium bait.he he- Frank

Got this from their web site, nowhere does it say anything about Rotwelliers...lol

DEC operates a dozen fish hatcheries across the state to keep the state's waterways stocked with fish. ---->Each hatchery welcomes visitors and offers learning opportunities for adults, families and youth groups.<----- You sure learned something didn't you Ness? Not to show up on sundays, hehehehe

One of the best places to learn about New York's fisheries is at the Salmon River Fish Hatchery at Altmar east of Pulaski, NY. This large modern salmon hatchery has an exhibit area, an introductory video, and a self-guided walk through the hatchery building and along a fish ladder.

When to Plan a Hatchery Visit?

Hatcheries are informative and fun to visit any time of the year. To see what fish species are present at each hatchery, and the hatchery location and available visiting times, check the table below. For more information about each DEC fish hatchery, you can contact the hatchery manager directly.

They use Rotweilers to ward of Alien Blob's from sneaking up on the trout. Was this before or after your incounter with the Blob Ness? (:
