I went to Bitter Lake-S.D. this weekend. The lake is in a huge algae bloom and could be described as looking like chucky pea soup. While there a friend said that he heard that the walleyes are not fit to eat because of Mercury contamination. Is this just a big rumor?? or is there something to this. I checked in the fishing regulation book and nothing was mentioned, and there were no signs posted. I wouldn't think that unless you ate them more than once a week there should be a problem anyway. To me this sounds like a rumor. I'd appreciate any input about this if anyone else has heard something similar. Sounds like a way to reduce the fishing pressure to me.

Thanks for any information

there is a web site for the glacial lakes area of south dakota. www.glpta.org/ .that mercury
scare was written up on this web site. i just
checked it before typing this and checked and its
not there. go to the web site and go to table
of contents, then to fishing report. good luck.

There is a mercury warning on Bitter lake, but it's one of those, only so many ounces a week deals. There's been a lot of print about it here in the local papers, and it seems to be keeping a lot of people off the lake.

That is defiantly something to keep an eye on, especially for expecting mothers. The EPA is just starting to mandate tougher mercury emission standards for power plants because of recent studies linking low level mercury exposure expecting mothers to neurological impairment in their kids.

Maybe that is my problem....my mom fished too much...

Good luck and don't glow in the dark.
