I have been using vanish 10lb and 12lb vanish as a leader, connected to powerpro, for the past 6 months and have had a lot of problems. Prob is, it fray's very easy, doesn't seem that abrasion resistent and i usually have to tie 3-4 times before the knot holds (yes i wet it).
The only reason I still use it is for its invisiblity factor. Most of the lakes i fish are crystal clear (15-25ft) with a blue or light green tint. I troll both open water and shallow structure (rocks and stumps).
So the question is: is there a line out there meets my needs? Or is vanish my only hope :(
thanks in advance for your help.
There are other, more expensive brands of flourocarbon lines out there, from what I hear Seguar makes an excellent product, but I haven't used it myself, so I couldn't really say. I think that there are enough other brands of flourocarbon that you can find one that will work for you.

I have had trouble with the newer lines also. I went back to the Maxima mono lines, Ultragreen and Chameleon. The Ultragreen will disappear in clear water, and is abrasion resistant. The Chameleon wil disappear in lighty to heavily stained water.

I have used the Seguar line with good success. I do not have experience with Vanish, but I have heard that it has had some issues. I only use the 10lb Seguar for leader/snell material and I believe it has put more fish in the boat on tough days on clear lakes.

Ditto on Seagur -- from ice fishing to line-counter setups, I have no complaints. I use (most of the time) a leader of 10 or 12-pound test that is just short of being the length of the rod. It's a bit more expensive (double?) than Vanish, but when you buy a 150-yard spool, and just use it for leader material, it's going to last quite a while.

I am no longer using the Floro as I did last year for my spinners and leaders. After some VERY dissapointing breaks at or near the boat, I went back to the Trilene green. In most clear waters, the fish don't seam to know the difference. In fact, side by side, I was out fished by the Trilene.
I will still use it when fishing for the little guys in the spring, but when big fish are the fare for the day, go back to the flexible and reliable mono.
I realy like the JB spinners with the line that is tinted darker as it nears the hooks. Have always done well with those. I only wish I could get them in 6-8' lengths or knew how to tie good 2 and 3 hook snells.

I use that exact combo with great luck--PowerPro with Vanish leader. However, I don't use the Vanish for tying spinners. I use the Vanish for leaders when pulling cranks, spoons, etc (usually suspended rather than in the rocks).

Used the vanish extensively this past weekend for the first time. Also had to re-tie a couple times. Switched to using a palomar knot and did NOT have another problem after that. Did not have any fraying problems but fished cabbage weeds most of the time with rigs and spinners. Since I spend most of my fishing time in off colored water, I don't need the invisiblity. Try the Palomar Knot before giving up on the stuff and see if that makes things better for you.Good luck.

wasn't it PWT Pro Mike Mclellen that stated "if fish where afraid of line, why would they swim into nets" food for thought :)
